Methods for chemical analysis of xanthates - The infrared
drying method for determination of moisture and volatile
matter content
This standard complies with GB 1467-78 General rules and regulations of the chemical
analysis methods for products of metallurgical industries.
This standard is applicable to the determination of moisture and volatile matter content
in sodium xanthates or potassium xanthates with lower alkyl groups (such as ethyl,
isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, n-pentyl, and isopentyl).
1 Method summary
The moisture and volatile matter in the xanthate are dried with an infrared moisture
rapid tester. Based on the weight loss after drying, the moisture and volatile matter
content are calculated.
2 Instruments
2.1 Weighing bottle: with a diameter of 60~70 mm and a height of 30 mm.
2.2 Calcium chloride dryer.
2.3 Infrared moisture rapid tester.
3 Analysis steps
3.1 The storage conditions of xanthate samples require moisture-proof and heat-
proofing, and the bottle cap shall be tightly closed; the time of uncapping shall be as
short as possible during analysis.
3.2 Use the weighing bottle (2.1) that has been dried to constant weight to weigh 2 g of
the dried xanthate sample (accurate to 0.0002 g) and 1 g of the synthetic sample
(accurate to 0.0002 g), and spread the samples evenly on the bottom of the bottles.
When weighing the sample, close the bottle cap tightly; then, open the bottle cap and
place it together with the bottle on the material tray of the infrared moisture rapid tester.
The infrared lamp is 250 W and irradiates the material directly; the irradiation distance
should be 14~17 cm, and the instrument door shall be closed.
