This standard applies to the test and classification for resistance of all kinds of
pharmaceutical glass materials to attack of boiling aqueous solution of mixed
alkali.
This method is to immerse the glass samples of a total surface area 10 ~ 15
cm2 in the equal-volume of boiling mixed solution of 0.5 mol/L sodium carbonate
and 1 mol/L sodium hydroxide for 3 hours. Then determine the mass of loss of
the glass samples per unit surface area.
[Apparatus] Container (Figure 1): it is made of pure silver or alkali-resisting
silver alloys or welding stainless steel (the constituents of welding stainless
steel: 18% chromium, 10% nickel, 0.08% carbon and additional titanium); a
bottom in hemispherical shape or a flat bottom AND a closely-stoppered cap
FORM a cylindrical silver cup; the cap has a thick-neck and a small mouth for
inserting a thermometer, and it is equipped with four hooks to hang samples; if
necessary, one gasket made of a stable material can be added to ensure the
sealing of the joint between cup body and cap.
Condensers: spherical- or straight-shape, 400 mm long, and made of chemical
attack resistant glass.
Gooch glass funnels (Figure 2): made of chemical attack resistant glass; the
upper mount is connected with the condenser through the stopper; the lower
tube of the funnel is connected to the neck of the container through the stopper;
the stopper shall be made of a stable material; they shall be boiled in water for
60 minutes in advance.
Heating bath-pool: it is equipped with a controller which is capable of heating
glycerin and controlling at any constant temperature between 100 ~ 120°C; and
also equipped with a stirring apparatus.
