Nondestructive Testing of Pressure Equipment
– Part 12. Magnetic Flux Leakage Testing
1 Scope
1.1 This Part of NB/T 47013 specifies the magnetic flux leakage testing and result
evaluation method for pressure equipment made of ferromagnetic materials, seamless
steels pipe and welded pipe (excluding submerged arc welding).
1.2 This Part is applicable to the magnetic flux leakage testing for corrosion, existing
mechanical damage, and other volume defects generated on the pressure equipment
made of ferromagnetic materials with or without coatings, and on the internal and
external surface of the element base metal; the thickness of tested workpiece is no
greater than 30mm, pipe diameter is no less than 9mm.
1.3 The crack testing of pressure equipment and magnetic flux leakage testing of
atmospheric pressure storage tank.

3 Terms and Definitions
The following terms and definitions and those ones stipulated in GB/T 12604.5, GB/T
12604.6, GB/T 20737 and NB/T 47013.1 are applicable to this Part.
3.1 Defect equivalent
The quantity equivalent to the specific or conventional numerical value. In this Part, it
indicates the quantity value of defects given by the obtained signal characteristics.
3.2 Defect sizing
The description of geometric dimension of defects given by the obtained signal
characteristics.
4 General Requirements
4.1 Testing staff
The staff performing the magnetic flux leakage testing shall obtain the corresponding
qualification certificate according to the provisions of NB/T 47013.1; meanwhile they
shall possess basic knowledge of electromagnetism; then they can carry out the testing
work specified by corresponding qualification level.
4.2 Equipment and material
4.2.1 Magnetic flux leakage testing system
4.2.1.1 The magnetic flux leakage testing system shall include at least power supply,
magnetization device, magnetic field sensor, scanning device, signal acquisition unit,
signal displaying (or alarming) unit, signal storage unit, etc.; if necessary, also include
demagnetization device, and position recording device.
4.2.1.2 The magnetic flux leakage testing system shall have the functions of funding
defect position, and performing deep analysis and display.
4.2.2 Specimen
4.2.2.1 Calibration Specimen
4.2.2.1.1 The calibration specimen mainly aims to test the individual channel
functions of magnetic flux leakage tester, adjust the testing sensitivity, adjust testing
parameters and ensure the accuracy of testing results.
4.2.2.1.2 The calibration specimen shall be made of the same materials with the
tested object or materials with similar electromagnetic properties.
e) Probe. number of probes, probe model and layout;
f) System verification;
g) Specimen calibration.
4.3.6 The magnetic flux leakage testing of each pressure equipment shall be
complied operating instructions according to the testing process specification; if the
equipment with the same specifications is in the same working conditions, then one
operating instructions can be shared.
4.3.7 When the operating instructions are used first-time, it shall be verified; the
verification mode can adopt the comparative specimen and actually-testing object.
4.4 Testing environment
4.4.1 The testing procedures shall abide by the relevant national and local laws,
especially the laws and regulations involved accident prevention, electrical safety,
high-risk industries and environmental protection.
