Scope

This Standard specifies an empirical test procedure to evaluate the resistance of coatings
of paints, varnishes and related products to cracking or separation from the metal
substrate after gradual deformation by indentation under standard conditions.
This Standard is applicable to single coating or composite coating system. For
composite coating system, each coating can be tested separately or the whole system
can be tested.
The test method may be as follows.
- Test to specified indentation depth and assess "pass/fail" based on compliance with
specific requirements;
- The indentation depth is gradually increased to determine the minimum depth at
which the coating just begins to crack or separate from the substrate.
