Foreword 
This Standard is a revised edition of GB 7702.4-87 according to American Society for
Testing Material standard ASTM D 2854-89 (certified in 1993) “Standard Test Method for
Apparent Density of Activated Carbon”. It adopts equivalent standard content of ASTM D
2854-89 (certified in 1993) on main technical content. Determination of apparent density is
changed from manual tapping in GB 7702.4-87 to electric vibration falling in this Standard.
After issued and implemented, this Standard supports the use of national standard GB/T
7701.1-1997 ~ 7701.7-1997 “Granular Activated Carbon from Coal”.
This Standard replaces GB 7702.4-87, from the effective date. Implementation transitional
period of this Standard is one year.
This Standard was proposed by China North Industries Corporation.
This Standard shall be under the jurisdiction of the Institute of China Ordnance Industrial
Standardization.
Drafting organization of this Standard. Shanxi Xinhua Chemical Plant.
Main drafters of this Standard. Wang Yueyi, Zhang Xu, Zhang Chongjie, Wang Jianguang,

1  Scope 
This Standard specifies the contents such as instruments, determination procedures,
processing of determination results that are required for the determination of apparent
density of granular activated carbon from coal.
This Standard applies to the determination of apparent density of granular activated
carbon from coal (hereinafter referred to as activated carbon).

The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute
provisions of this Standard. At the time of publication, the editions indicated were valid. All
standards are subject to revision, and parties who enter into agreement based on this
Standard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions

3  Summary of method 
Activated carbon falls into a measuring cylinder through vibration. Weigh the mass of 100
mL of activated carbon. Calculate the apparent density.
4  Instruments and devices 
4.1 Apparent density measuring device (see Figure 1).
4.2 Vibrating sieve machine. Revolving speed is 280 r/min ~ 320 r/min.
Knocking speed is 140 beats/min ~ 160 beats/min.
