Foreword
This Standard was drafted by modifying and adopting ISO 2478.1987, Dense shaped refractory products ?€? Determination of permanent change in dimensions on heating (English version) and ISO 2477.2005, Shaped insulating refractory products ?€? Determination of permanent change in dimensions on heating (English version). Annex A gives the list comparing the paragraph numbers between this Standard and ISO 2478.1987 and ISO 2477.2005. Table B.1 gives the list of the technical differences between this Standard and ISO 2478.1987 and ISO 2477.2005 as well as their reasons. The technical differences are marked with vertical single line in the page margin of the provisions concerned in this Standard. The main modifications are as follows. -- it is drafted by combining the content of ISO 2478.1987 and ISO 2477.2005; -- it changes the references of ISO standards into corresponding Chinese Standards; -- it changes test furnace of oxidizing atmosphere into test furnace;
-- it changes the height of test piece of dense shaped refractory products (60 ?? 2) mm into (65 ?? 2) mm;
-- it changes rate of volume change into combination of it and linear change rate in use; and
-- it changes the dimensions of test piece of shaped insulating refractory products 100 mm ?? 114 mm ?? 76 (mm) mm into 100 mm ?? 114 mm ?? 75 (65) mm.
This Standard replaced GB/T 5988-2004, Dense shaped refractory products ?€? Determination of permanent change in dimensions on heating, and GB/T 3997.1-1998, Shaped insulating refractory products ?€? Determination of permanent change in dimension on heating; and compared with GB/T 5988-2004, the main technical changes of this Standard are as follows.
-- it changes the name of the standard into Refractory products ?€? Determination of permanent change in dimension on heating;
-- it changes the name of the standard from Dense shaped refractory products ?€? Determination of permanent change in dimensions on heating into Refractory products ?€? Determination of permanent change in dimension on heating;

1 Scope
This Standard specifies the principle, apparatus, test pieces, procedure, expression of results and test report for the test method of permanent change in dimension on heating of a refractory product.
This Standard applies to the determination of permanent change in dimension on heating of a refractory product.

The terms and definitions defined in GB/T 18930 apply to this Standard. 4 Principle
Test pieces in the shape of rectangular prisms or cylinders are placed in a test furnace, and their linear dimensions or volume measured. The test pieces are heated in a furnace at a prescribed rate to a specified temperature, which is maintained for a specified time. After cooling to ambient temperature, the measurements on the test pieces are repeated, and the permanent change in dimensions or volume is calculated. 5 Apparatus
5.1 Furnace
Electric or other type of furnaces which meets the requirements of 7.5 to 7.7. 5.2 Thermocouples
Minimum of three, to measure the temperature and the temperature distribution above the space occupied by the test pieces.
5.3 Temperature recording and display device
For use in conjunction with the thermocouples, so that the temperature in the furnace is controlled, recorded and displayed continuously.
5.4 Length-measuring instrument ?€? for dense shaped products
5.4.1 The apparatus consists of a stand, base plate and carrier. A dial gauge, with an accuracy of 0.01 mm, is mounted on a stand which has a surface-ground base plate; and a square test piece carrier is place on the base plate (as shown in Figure 1). The dial gauge is capable of moving up and down, and rotating around the stand. When measuring the test pieces, place the test piece on the carrier, with three studs to support the test piece and two pins to locate it to locate the test piece. The test piece carrier has a ground surface; the test piece carrier can move freely on the smooth base plate during measuring. A diagonal mark shall be inscribed at one corner to enable a rectangular test piece to be marked and located (as shown in Figure 2). The measuring calibration block can be made of stainless steel or high rigidity steel quenched and rust-proof treated, whose dimensions include diameter 50 mm and height 65 mm. 5.4.2 Comparator ?€? for shaped insulating products and fired materials
Vernier caliper, digital comparator or electronic digital comparator which is capable of the distance of test piece to the opposite side, with an accuracy of 0.1 mm. 5.5 Volume-measuring device
7 Procedure
7.1 Drying of test pieces
Dry each test piece in the drying oven at 110 ?? 5??C to constant mass, or as agreed to by the interested parties.
7.2 Measurement of test pieces
7.2.1 Calibrate the length-measuring device using the cylinder of known length. Place the test piece on the carrier, with the 65 mm dimension vertical. For rectangular test pieces, align one corner with the diagonal mark on the carrier, and mark this corner so that the test piece may be placed in the same position for measurement before and after firing. For cylindrical test pieces, align either one of two perpendicular diameters to the diagonal mark on the carrier.
Measure the length of the test piece in four positions, to an accuracy of 0.01 mm, by moving the carrier with the test piece over the base plate. For rectangular test pieces, the four positions are located on the diagonals, 20 to 25 mm from each corner. For cylindrical test pieces, the positions are 10 to 25 mm from the perimeter, on two diameters at right angles. Record each measuring point and the length L0 at each measuring point.
7.2.2 Dense shaped refractory products ?€? volume measurement method
Determine the bulk density of the test piece in accordance with GB/T 2997. Calculate the bulk volume VB, in cubic centimetres, using the following equation. where.
