Scope

This document specifies the glow-wire test method for determining the Glow-Wire
Flammability Index (GWFI) on specimens of solid electric and electrical insulating materials
or other solid materials.
GWFI is the highest temperature, determined in accordance with this standardized procedure,
at which the material under test will not ignite, or even if ignition occurs, the flame will
extinguish within 30 seconds after the removal of the glow-wire, and the material under test
will not be completely consumed; furthermore, any molten drips produced will not ignite the
packaging silk paper.
This test method is a material test performed on a series of standard specimens. The data
obtained, together with data from the Glow-Wire Ignition Temperature (GWIT) test method in
IEC 60695-2-13, are used to assess whether a material meets the requirements of IEC 60695-
2-11 in accordance with the preselection procedures of IEC 60695-1-30[4].
NOTE: as the result of a fire hazard assessment, a series of appropriate preselection tests for
flammability and ignitability can reduce the number of tests required on end products.
This document is intended for use by product committees when preparing standards in
accordance with the principles laid down in IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51.
One of the responsibilities of a product committee is to make use of this series of standards,
wherever applicable, when preparing standards for its field. Unless specifically referred to or
included in the relevant standards, the requirements, test methods or test conditions of this
document do not apply.
