Foreword
GB/T 4897 "Particleboard" is divided into seven parts.
— Part 1. General requirements for all board types;
— Part 2. Requirements for general purpose boards for use in dry conditions;
— Part 3. Requirements for boards for interior fitments (including furniture) for use
in dry conditions;
— Part 4. Requirements for load-bearing boards for use in dry conditions;
— Part 5. Requirements for load-bearing boards for use in humid conditions;
— Part 6. Requirements for heavy-duty load-bearing boards for use in dry
conditions;
— Part 7. Requirements for heavy-duty load-bearing boards for use in humid
conditions.
This Part is part 1 of GB/T 4897 "Particleboard".
This Part is not equivalent to the European standard EN 312-1.1997 "Particleboard -
Part 1. General requirements for all board types". Technical requirements (except for
formaldehyde emission limit indicators) and marks adopt EN 312-1; and add items
such as definition, classification, appearance quality, inspection rules.
The Part replaces corresponding part of GB/T 4897-1992 "Particleboard".
COMPARE GB/T 4897-2003 "Particleboard" with the previous version of the standard
(GB/T 4897-1992), the important technical changes of the original standard are
divided into seven parts, in which the requirements for load-bearing boards for use in
humid conditions and requirements for heavy-duty load-bearing boards for use in
humid conditions are newly added. This Part only specifies the common requirements
for all types of particleboard.
This Part was proposed by the State Forestry Administration.
This Part shall be under the jurisdiction of the National Technical Committee on
Wood-based Panels Standardization of China.
Responsible drafting organization of this Part. Research Institute of Wood Industry of
China Academy of Forestry.
Participating drafting organizations of this Part. Beijing Timber Plant, and Hebei Cyber
Panel Industry Group.
Main drafters of this Part. Chen Shiying, Long Ling, Zheng Fengshan, and Zhang
Zhanhao.
This Part was first-issued in February 1985, and was first-revised in August 1992. This
is the second revision.
National Technical Committee on Wood-based Panels Standardization of China is
entrusted to be responsible for interpretation of this Part.
Particleboard - Part 1.
General requirements for all board types
1 Scope
This Part of GB/T 4897 specifies the definition, classification, statistical calculation
and determination methods, measurement and test methods, inspection rules, marks,
packaging, transportation and storage, signs, etc. of particleboard.
This Part applies to particleboard defined in 3.1.
This Part does not apply to oriented strand board (OSB).
2 Normative references
The provisions in following documents become the provisions of this Standard through
reference in this Standard. For dated references, the subsequent amendments
(excluding corrigendum) or revisions do not apply to this Standard, however, parties
who reach an agreement based on this Standard are encouraged to study if the latest
versions of these documents are applicable. For undated references, the latest edition
of the referenced document applies.

panels and surface decorated wood-based panels
3 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this Part of GB/T 4897.
3.1
Particleboard
Board made by hot pressing from wood debris (wood shavings, sawdust or similar
materials) or non-timber plant debris (flax residues, bagasse, wheat straws, rice
straws or similar materials) together with adhesives.
3.2
Particleboard for general purpose boards for use in dry conditions
Particleboard used in dry indoor, and non-load-bearing occasions, e.g. temporary
exhibition panels, partitions, etc.
3.3
Particleboard for boards for interior fitments (including furniture) for use in dry
conditions
Particleboard used in dry indoor, for furniture or interior fitments, and can not be used
in water immersion or high humidity occasions. Particleboard usually has surface
decoration process.
3.4
Particleboard for load-bearing boards for use in dry conditions
Particleboard for indoor construction that can still bear a certain load after affected by
short-time water immersion or high humidity, such as environments like kitchen,
bathroom, etc.
3.5
Particleboard for load-bearing boards for use in humid conditions
Particleboard for outdoor construction, with abilities of withstanding aging effects and
water immersion under outdoor weather conditions, that can still bear a certain load.
3.6
Particleboard for heavy-duty load-bearing boards for use in dry conditions
Particleboard for indoor construction that can still bear a great load after affected by
short-time water immersion or high humidity, such as environments like kitchen,
bathroom, etc.
3.7
Particleboard for heavy-duty load-bearing boards for use in humid conditions
Particleboard for outdoor construction, with abilities of withstanding aging effects and
water immersion under outdoor weather conditions, that can still bear a great load.
3.8
— Single-layer-structure particleboard;
— Three-layer-structure particleboard;
— Multi-layer-structure particleboard;
— Gradual-changing-structure particleboard.
4.6 Classification according to raw material used.
— Wood particleboard;
— Bagasse particleboard;
— Flax residue particleboard;
— Wheat straw particleboard;
— Bamboo particleboard;
— Others.
4.7 Classification according to purpose.
— General purpose boards for use in dry conditions;
— Boards for interior fitments (including furniture) for use in dry conditions;
— Load-bearing boards for use in dry conditions;
— Load-bearing boards for use in humid conditions;

etc.
5.2 Format-width
Particleboard format dimension is 1220mm×2440mm.
NOTE. After agreed by both supplier and purchaser, it can produce particleboard of other format
Su — Standard specified value.
6.2.3 When inspecting multiple pieces of boards, each board shall comply with the
specifications of 6.2.1 and 6.2.2. If not, it shall be re-inspected and determined
according to 8.4.
