Scope

This document specifies methods for measuring the specific aerobic biodegradation rate
of solid, water-insoluble plastic materials under mesophilic conditions.
NOTE 1: Specific aerobic biodegradation rate (strictly speaking, the specific mineralization rate -
referring to the assessment of organic carbon conversion to CO2 while disregarding biomass
formation) is expressed as the amount of carbon mineralized into CO2 per unit area per unit time.
The method described in this document does not provide information regarding the
ultimate aerobic biodegradability of the test samples. For test methods concerning the
biodegradability of plastic materials under mesophilic conditions, reference may be
made to relevant standards such as ISO 23517 and ISO 22403. The method described
in this document may be used to determine DT50 only when the plastic material has
been demonstrated to be inherently biodegradable using appropriate standards (such as
ISO 23517 and ISO 22403). Furthermore, for plastic materials whose ultimate
biodegradability has not yet been established, the determined specific biodegradation
rate shall not be regarded as an intrinsic property of the material as a whole.
This document considers only the release of CO2 as a direct measure of the
mineralization of the test sample.
The method described in this paper can also be applied to solid reference materials.
This document does not apply to claims regarding "marine, soil, and freshwater
biodegradation" for biodegradable plastic materials. For such claims, please refer to the
relevant product standards (if available).
NOTE 2: Although results may indicate that the tested plastic materials and polymers will undergo
biodegradation at specific aerobic biodegradation rates or DT50 values under the prescribed test
conditions, such laboratory results cannot be directly applied to actual end-use sites or
environmental areas affected by leakage, such as soil, marine environments, or lakes.
