Scope

This document specifies the design, operating parameters, safety requirements, data
exchange, exit-factory and type inspections, as well as model designations and marks,
for onboard lithium-ion traction batteries used in rail transit rolling stock. It also
describes the corresponding test methods.
This document applies to onboard lithium-ion traction batteries for rail transit rolling
stock.
The battery system referred to in this document is an energy storage system serving as
the traction power source for rail transit rolling stock - such as the hybrid vehicles
defined in IEC 62864-1.2016 - and does not include lithium-ion batteries used for
auxiliary power supplies.
Sub-components within the battery system, such as the battery management system and
the battery thermal management system, are also included in this document.
Power conversion equipment (such as choppers, converters, etc.), inductors, capacitors,
and switchgear are outside the scope of this document.
General requirements for onboard energy storage systems are specified in IEC 62864-
1.2016.
This document specifically specifies lithium-ion battery technology, but does not
preclude the use of technologies other than lithium-ion battery technology for traction
battery applications.
Hybrid energy storage systems that utilize two or more energy storage technologies -
such as traction batteries and electric double-layer capacitors - fall outside the scope of
this document. However, if different energy storage system technologies are employed
on the same train and managed independently, each individual energy storage system
must comply with its respective standards.
