5 Materials
5.1 Steel plates for steel drums shall comply with the provisions of GB/T 2518,
GB/T 3274, GB/T 11253, YB/T 055, and other thin steel plates may be selected
in accordance with user requirements.
5.2 The crimping sealing material shall be made of heat-resistant, weather-
resistant, durable and dissolving-resistant materials that have good sealing
properties and are compatible with the contents.
5.3 The steel drum closure system shall comply with the provisions of GB/T
13251.
5.4 The outer surface coating shall be made of materials with strong adhesion,
weather resistance and durability; the inner surface coating shall be made of
materials compatible with the contents.
5.5 The crimp sealing packing, closure system and internal coating which are
in direct contact with food, food additives or pharmaceuticals shall comply with
food safety regulations.
6 Technical requirements
6.1 Basic requirements
6.1.1 The drum body, the drum head, and the drum bottom shall be made of the
entire steel plate and shall not be spliced; the thickness of the steel plate shall
meet the strength requirements.
6.1.2 The drum body weld is made by electric resistance welding.
6.1.3 The drum body type can be one of the following.
- No ring ribs, no corrugations;
- With 2 ring ribs;
- There are 3 ~ 7 corrugations at both ends;
- There are 2 ring ribs, and there are 3 ~ 7 corrugations from the ring ribs to
the drum head and drum bottom.
Note. The drum type can be as agreed upon in accordance with user
requirements.
6.1.4 The sealing of the drum body and the drum head and bottom shall be filled
with sealing packing as required, the type may be one of the following.
Use hand touching, visual inspection and general or special gauge for
inspection.
7.2 Specifications
Use general purpose or special gauges for inspection.
7.3 Weight tolerance
Use a gauge with a resolution of not more than 0.05 kg for measurement.
7.4 Airtight test
Tight head steel drums are tested in accordance with GB/T 17344. The test
conditions are shown in Table 1. Check the sample drum for leakage.
7.5 Hydraulic test
This test is limited to tight head steel drums. Fill the drum with water, connect
the pressure gauge to the pressure pump, and fix it on the injection port through
the connecting parts; pressurize the inside of the drum; after the test pressure
is reached, hold the pressure for 5 minutes. See Table 1 for the test conditions
and check the sample drum for leakage.
7.6 Stacking test
Fill the empty drum with the substance similar to the density of the goods to be
transported, in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 4857.3. The test time is
24 h, the steel drum shall not have any deformation or severe damage that may
reduce its strength or cause stack instability through inspection. The stacking
load is calculated in accordance with formula (1).
Where.
P - The stacking load imposed on the steel drum container, in Newtons (N);
H - Stacking height, in meters (m);
Note. The stacking height is 3 m for ground transportation and 8 m for sea
transportation.
h - The height of a single piece of steel drum, in meters (m);
m - The mass of the single-piece steel drum after loading the corresponding
items, in kilograms (kg).
a) Take 3 sample drums to test the items of 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3, 6.4, 6.6, 6.7,
then use these 3 sample drums for airtight test, then use these 3 sample
drums for hydraulic test;
b) From the remaining 6 sample drums, take 3 sample drums for stacking
test, then use these 6 sample drums for the falling test.
8.4 Decision rules
8.4.1 Exit-factory inspection
8.4.1.1 If four or more items of 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4, 6.6, and 6.7 fail, the sample is
judged to be unqualified. When the airtight test in Table 1 fails, the sample is
judged unqualified.
8.4.1.2 When the number of unqualified samples is greater than or equal to the
number of failures specified in Tables 4 and 5, the batch is judged to be
unqualified.
8.4.2 Type inspection
8.4.2.1 If four or more items of 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4, 6.6, and 6.7 are unqualified,
the sample is judged to be unqualified; if one of the samples fails, the batch is
judged to be unqualified.
8.4.2.2 If one of the items in Table 1 fails, the sample is judged to be unqualified;
if one of the samples fails, the batch is judged to be unqualified.
9 Marking, packaging, transportation and storage
9.1 Marking
There shall be markings on the steel drum, including. the name or code of the
manufacturer, the date of manufacture, and the thickness of the steel plate.
9.2 Packaging
The drum is packaged in a container, tray or as agreed by the user.
9.3 Transportation
Avoid bumps, falls and rolling during transportation and handling.
9.4 Storage
