Color determination method of liquid chemicals
(Hazen unit – platinum-cobalt scale)
This Standard applies to the color determination of the clear liquid chemicals or
the liquid chemicals of a color that is slightly similar to the reference platinum-
cobalt scale. This color is typically characterized as “yellow brown”.
1 Method summary
COMPARE the color of the sample with that of the standard platinum-cobalt
color solution by visual inspection. USE Hazen (platinum-cobalt) color unit to
show the results. The Hazen (platinum-cobalt) color unit indicates that. A liter
of solution contains the color of 1mg of platinum (calculated as chloroplatinic
acid) and 2mg of cobalt chloride hexahydrate solution.
2 Instruments
2.1 Type 72 spectrophotometer or similar ones.
2.2 Nessler tube. 50 or 100mL, graduated at 100mm above the bottom.
2.3 Colorimetric tube rack. Generally, the colorimetric tube racks are lined with
white bottom plates. They can also be equipped with reflectors on the bottom,
so as to improve the effects of color observation.
3 Reagents
3.1 Cobalt chloride hexahydrate (CoCl2 • 6H2O). Analytical reagent.
3.2 Hydrochloric acid. Analytical reagent, which meets the requirements of GB
622 Hydrochloric acid.
3.3 Chloroplatinic acid (H2PtCl6).
Preparation method of chloroplatinic acid. PUT 1.00g of platinum on a glass or
porcelain dish. HEAT the glass or porcelain dish on the boiling water bath until
the platinum is dissolved in a sufficient amount of aqua regia. EVAPORATE the
solution until there is nothing left. ADD 4ml of hydrochloric acid solution.
EVAPORATE until there is nothing left again. REPEAT this operation more than
twice, so as to obtain 2.10g of chloroplatinic acid.
4.3 Storage.
Respectively PUT the standard colorimetric mother-solution and the diluted
solution in the brown glass bottles with stoppers. PLACE the glass bottles in
the dark. The standard colorimetric mother-solution can be kept for 1 year, while
the diluted solution can be kept for 1 month. It is best to use the freshly prepared
solution.
5 Test procedures
5.1 INJECT a certain amount of sample into a Nessler tube until it fills up to the
scale mark. Similarly, INJECT the standard platinum-cobalt contrast solution
with similar color into another Nessler tube until it fills up to the scale mark.
5.2 COMPARE the color of the sample with that of the standard platinum-cobalt
contrast solution. CONDUCT color comparison under the sunlight or
fluorescent light. Directly FACE the white background. OBSERVE from top to
bottom. AVOID observing from the side. PICK out the similar colors.
6 Result report
The sample color is represented by the Hazen (platinum-cobalt) color unit of
standard platinum-cobalt contrast solution, which is the most similar to the
sample color. If none of the color of standard platinum-cobalt contrast solution
is consistent with that of the sample, then ESTIMATE a similar platinum-cobalt
scale according to the possibilities, and DESCRIBE the observed color.
