Mechanical properties of fasteners - Stainless steel bolts,
screws and studs
1 Scope
This document specifies the mechanical and physical properties of coarse and fine
thread bolts, screws and studs (hereinafter referred to as fasteners) made of corrosion-
resistant stainless steel, when tested at an ambient temperature of 10 °C ~ 35 °C. The
performance grades corresponding to the groups of austenitic, martensitic, ferritic,
duplex (austenitic-ferritic) stainless steel fasteners are specified.
GB/T 3098.25 provides general rules and additional technical information on applicable
stainless steels and their properties.
Fasteners that meet the requirements of this document are tested at an ambient
temperature of 10 °C ~ 35 °C. At higher and/or lower temperatures, fasteners may not
maintain the specified mechanical and physical properties.
Note 1: Fasteners that meet the requirements of this document are used at temperatures of -
20 °C ~ +150 °C, but can also be used at low temperatures of -196 °C and high temperatures of
+300 °C. For more detailed information, see Appendix A and GB/T 3098.25.
When used outside the temperature range of -20 °C ~ +150 °C, the user is responsible
for consulting an experienced fastener material expert and considering the influences
of stainless steel composition, exposure time at high or low temperatures, temperature
on the mechanical properties of the fastener and the clamped parts, as well as the
corrosive use environment of the bolted connection, to determine the appropriate
selection for the specific application.
Note 2: When the use temperature is up to +800 °C, GB/T 3098.24 gives the selection of
appropriate stainless steel groups and performance grades.
Fasteners to which this document applies:
- Ordinary threads in accordance with GB/T 192;
- Diameter and pitch combinations in accordance with GB/T 193 and GB/T 9144;
- Coarse thread M1.6 ~ M39, fine thread M8×1 ~ M39×3;
- Thread tolerances in accordance with GB/T 197 and GB/T 9145;
- Specified performance grades;

This document replaces GB/T 3098.6-2014 "Mechanical properties of fasteners -
Stainless steel bolts, screws and studs". Compared with GB/T 3098.6-2014, in addition
to structural adjustments and editorial changes, the main technical changes are as
follows:
a) ADD duplex (austenite-ferrite) stainless steel with performance grades of 70, 80,
100 (see Figure 1);
b) ADD the austenitic stainless steel performance grade 100 and group A8 (see
Figure 1);
c) CHANGE the surface finishing (see 6.3; Chapter 4 of the 2014 edition);
d) ADD the stainless steel bolt and nut group matching (see 6.4);
e) ADD the minimum tensile load and minimum load calculation value when the
specified plastic elongation is 0.2%, as well as the principle of numerical
rounding (see Table 4 ~ Table 7);
f) ADD the fasteners with reduced bearing capacity due to head structure or rod
structure (see 8.2);
g) ADD the inspection procedure requirements and guidance (see 8.3 ~ 8.6);
h) ADD the applicability of full load capacity and reduced load capacity test methods
(see Chapter 8);
