Foreword
This Standard was drafted as per the rules specified in GB/T 1.1-2009.
This Standard is prepared referring to API 1560.1995 Usage Specification for
Lubricants used by the Automotive Manual Transmission, Manual Gearbox, and Drive
Axle.
This Standard was proposed by National Technical Committee for Standardization of
Petroleum Products and Lubricants (SAC/TC 280).
This Standard shall be under the jurisdiction of Petroleum Fuel and Lubricant
Subcommittee of National Technical Committee for Standardization of Petroleum
Products and Lubricants (SAC/TC 280/SC 1).
This Standard was prepared by SINOPEC Research Institute of Petroleum Processing.

Classification of Automotive Gear Lubricants
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the code instructions and detailed classification of automotive
gear lubricants.
This Standard is applicable to the classification and marking of the automotive gear
lubricants.
2 Normative References
The following documents are essential to the application of this document. For the
dated documents, only the versions with the dates indicated are applicable to this
document; for the undated documents, only the latest version (including all the
amendments) are applicable to this document.
GB/T 17477 Automotive Gear Lubricant Viscosity Classification
3 Code Instructions
3.1 Each type is determined as per the product characteristics, usage occasion, and
usage object.
3.2 Each type shall be expressed by the code consisting of two capital English letters
or two capital English letters plus one digit. The letters and digit shall be connected by
“-”; the code consisting of letter, symbol and digit indicates the quality level.
3.3 In this classification system, the products are named in a uniform way. Each
specific type code shall be accompanied by a viscosity rating specified in GB/T 17477.
Example 1. a specific automotive gear lubricant product can be named GL-4 90, thereof
“90” represents the viscosity rating specified in GB/T 17477.
Example 2. a specific automotive gear lubricant product can be named GL-5 80W-90,
thereof “80W-90” represents the viscosity rating specified in GB/T 17477.
