Determination of acidity
This method is applicable to the determination of acidity of gasoline, kerosene and diesel that are not added with ethyl-fluid.
1 Method Summary
1.1 This method uses the boiling ethanol to extract the organic acid from the sample; then uses potassium hydroxide ethanol solution to titrate.
1.2 The milligram-number of potassium hydroxide that is required to neutralize 100 ml of petroleum product is called acidity.
2 Apparatuses
2.1 Erlenmeyer flask. 250 ml.
2.2 Spherical reflux condenser. length is about 300 mm.
2.3 Cylinder. 25, 50 and 100 ml.
2.4 Microburette. 2 ml, indexing is 0.02 ml; or 5 ml, indexing is 0.05 ml. 2.5 Electric hot plate or water bath.
3 Reagents
3.1 95% ethanol. analytical pure.
Refined Ethanol. After treated by silver nitrate and potassium hydroxide solution, then go through sedimentation and distillation.
3.2 Potassium hydroxide. analytical pure, prepare into 0.05N potassium hydroxide ethanol solution.
3.3 Basic Blue 6B. When preparing the solution, weigh 1g of basic blue, accurate to 0.01 g. Then add it to 50 ml of boiling 95% ethanol; reflux for 1 hour in a water bath; cool down and filter it. If necessary, the clear filtrate that has been cooked to hot shall be neutralized by 0.05N potassium hydroxide ethanol solution or 0.05N hydrochloric acid solution, until Additional Information.
