Determination of surface coating thickness
1 Scope
This standard specifies the method for the determination of the surface coating thickness of leather.
This standard applies to all kinds of coated leather.

3 Principle
Cut the leather, in a direction perpendicular to the leather's coating surface. Use a microscope to observe and measure, at the cut, the surface coating thickness of the leather. The result can be expressed as the thickness of the coating OR as a percentage of the coating thickness to the total thickness.
4 Equipment
4.1 Optical microscope or scanning electron microscope, which has at least 20X magnification.
4.2 Scalpel, which is applicable when the microscope uses the upper light source OR when the electron scanning microscope is used.
4.3 Tissue slicer, which is applicable when the microscope uses the lower light source.
4.4 Microscopy micrometer, accurate to 0.001 mm.
5 Sampling and preparation of specimen
5.1 Take sample according to QB/T 2706. Make pretreatment according to QB/T 2707.
5.2 Cut out 3 pieces of specimens, which is about 10 mm ?? 10 mm each. Each piece of specimen is made into longitudinal section slice according to 5.3 or 5.4. Note: If there are more than two samples in a tested batch, only 1 specimen needs to be taken from each piece, to ensure that the total number of specimens is not less than 3.
5.3 Use a scalpel (4.2) to cut through the leather. Ensure that during the cutting process, the cutting edge of the scalpel is perpendicular to the coating surface. Note: The longitudinal section slice, which is made according to 5.3, is suitable for test, by the use of optical microscope which adopts upper light source OR scanning electron microscope.
5.4 Use a tissue slicer to cut the longitudinal section slice of the specimen, which is suitable for the test by the optical microscope which adopts lower light source.
6 Operation procedures
6.1 Test by an optical microscope with a microscopy micrometer
6.1.1 Place the section slice, which was made according to 5.3 or 5.4, under the microscope. Adjust the position of the slice, so that the crosshair of the micrometer or a major scale of micrometer is aligned with the interface (line), between the coating and the leather. If the interface (line) between the coating and the leather is wavy, THEN, place the crosshair or main scale of the micrometer at the middle of the peak and trough of the wavy interface (line), between the coating and the leather (as shown in Figure 1). Read the scale FROM the interface (line) to the outer surface of the coating, which is the coating thickness.
