Foreword
This Standard equivalently adopts ISO 14897:2002 Plastics – Polyols for Use in the
Production of Polyurethan – Determination of Water Content.
Compared with ISO 14897:2002, the major changes of this Standard are as follows:
--- Delete the foreword of ISO 14897:2002; and add the foreword of Chinese
standard.
--- Add an informative Annex NA "Precision and Bias", which is included in the
relevant contents of Clause 13.
This Standard replaced GB/T 12008.6-1989 Polyether Polyols - Determination of
Water Content.
Compared with GB/T 12008.6-1989, the major changes of this Standard are as follows:
--- Change the name of the standard;
--- Expand the scope of application. This standard is not only applicable to polyether
polyols, but also to polyester polyols and polymer polyols;
--- Add the automatic Coulomb method;
--- Add "Terms and Definitions", "Applications" and "Interference" (see Clauses 3, 5,
and 6);
--- Delete the preparation of Karl Fischer reagent in the original standard, Annex A:
Sulfur Dioxide Generator, Annex B: "Permanent Stop" Method Coulometric
Titrator.
The Annex A and Annex NA of this Standard are informative.
This Standard was proposed by China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation.
This Standard shall be under the jurisdiction of National Technical Committee on
Plastic of Standardization Administration of China (SAC/TC 15).

Plastics – Polyols for Use in the Production of
Polyurethan – Determination of Water Content
1 Scope
This Standard specifies methods used to measure the water content of polyols
employed as polyurethane raw materials. Method A is a manual amperometric method
which has been included to better define the principles of the Karl Fischer
measurement. Amperometric methods are applicable to a wide range of polyols,
including those which have enough colour to obscure a visual end-point. Method B
includes an automated amperometric procedure and an automated coulometric
procedure. The coulometric procedure is an absolute method that does not require
calibration and gives improved sensitivity compared with amperometric methods.
