Foreword
This Standard equivalently adopts International Standard ISO 6312: 2001 Road vehicles
— Brake linings — Shear test procedure for disc brake pad and drum brake shoe
assemblies.
Compared with ISO 6312: 2001, the main changes of this Standard are as follows:
— CHANGE the “this test method” as “this Standard”;
— REPLACE the “ISO 611” by GB/T 5620 in this Standard;
— This Standard adopts international system of units (SI).
Annex A of this Standard is normative and annex B is informative.
This Standard is proposed by China Building Material Federation.
This Standard is under the jurisdiction of National Technical Committee (SAC/TC 406) on
Non-metallic Mineral Products of Standardization Administration of China.
The responsible drafting organization is: Xianyang Non-metallic Mineral Research and
Design Institute.
The participating drafting organizations are: Shandong Gold Phoenix Co., Ltd, Hangzhou
Hangcheng Friction Material Co., Ltd, Fujian Guanliang Auto Parts Industry Co., Ltd,
Dongying Xinyi Auto Parts Co., Ltd, and Hubei Feilong Friction Sealing Material Co., Ltd.
The chief drafting staffs of this Standard: Shi Zhigang, Wang Guangxing, Huang Shunmin,
Zhang Shishao, Du Dongsheng, Zhang Wenqiang, and Zhu Mianpeng.
Since implementation date of this Standard, JC/T 472-1992 Road vehicles - Brake linings
- Shear test procedure for disc brake pad and drum brake shoe assemblies shall be
abolished simultaneously.
Road vehicles - Brake linings - Shear test procedure
for disc brake pad and drum brake shoe assemblies
1 Scope
This Standard specifies vehicle brake pad (shoe) assemblies’ shear strength test – terms,
sample preparation, test equipment and fixtures, test steps, result calculation, and report
contents etc.
This Standard is applicable to determination of shear strength of integral molded or
bonded vehicle disc brake pad assemblies and drum brake shoe assemblies. This
Standard is applicable to determination of shear strength of riveted vehicle brake pad
(shoe) assemblies.

The articles contained in the following documents become part of this Standard when they
are quoted herein. For the dated documents so quoted, all the modifications (excluding
corrections) or revisions made thereafter shall not be applicable to this Standard. For the
undated documents so quoted, the latest editions shall be applicable to this Standard.
GB/T 5620 Road vehicles - Braking of automotive vehicles and their trailers - Vocabulary
(GB/T 5620-2002, ISO 611: 1994, IDT)
3 Terms and definitions
For the purpose of this Standard, the following terms and definitions, and those given in
GB/T 5620 shall apply.
3.1 lining
The friction material used to manufacture brake lining assembly.
3.2 carrier
The component of brake pad assembly, it is used to attach or rivet brake lining.
Where:
- Shear strength, unit is megapascals (MPa);
F – Failure shear force, unit is newton (N);
A – Sample’s area, unit is square millimeters (mm2).
8.2 Calculate A according to the bonded-line of friction material contour, instead of disk
pad’s surface, and bevel and groove shall be excluded. The shear strength shall be
expressed by the minimum value and the average value of test samples.
9 Contents of test report
The test report (see Appendix B.1) shall include the following contents:
a) Type, supplier and batch identification of the brake shoe assembly or disc brake pad
friction material;
b) Quantity of test samples (5 recommended);
c) Minimum value and average value of shear-force, or the minimum value and average
value of shear-strength, or both;
d) Shear pattern shall be expressed as follows:
1) Failure percentage;
— Glossy surface;
— Adhesive layer,
— Lining layer.
2) Area and location of glossy zone.
e) When it is different from the normal test conditions, it shall provide explanation
