Magnesium and Magnesium Alloy Scraps
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the requirements, test methods, inspection rules and markings,
packaging, transportation, storage, contract content, etc. for magnesium and magnesium alloy
scraps.
This Standard is applicable to magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps produced in each
production process and use process.
2 Normative References
The provisions in following documents become the provisions of this Standard through
reference in this Standard. For dated references, the subsequent amendments (excluding
corrigendum) or revisions do not apply to this Standard, however, parties who reach an
agreement based on this Standard are encouraged to study if the latest versions of these
documents are applicable. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document
applies.

3 Terms and Definitions
For the purposes of this Standard, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1 Coatings
Surface layers other than native oxide layers.
Example: oil, paint, magnesium coating.
3.2 Contaminant
Harmful physical or chemical foreign substances contained in returns.
Example: water, foundry sand.
3.3 Inserts
A part of metal or other substance that is inserted at the time of casting or at a certain location
in a finished product.
Example: bearings, threaded inserts.
3.4 Returns
Various types of magnesium and magnesium alloy materials that are collected or recycled at
various stages of production.
3.5 Turnings
Magnesium and magnesium alloy materials in the shape of pellets, flakes, rolls, strips, etc.
produced by machining or other processing.
4 Requirements
4.1 Magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps are mainly divided into three categories (Class I,
Class II, Class Ill) and nine grades (Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6,
Grade 7, Grade 8 and Grade 9) according to their physical forms.
4.2 Class I magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps are in the form of block and are divided
into five grades, namely, Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4 and Grade 5.
4.3 Class II magnesium and magnesium alloy scarps are in the form of chip and are divided
into three grades, namely, Grade 6, Grade 7 and Grade 8.
4.4 Class III magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps are in the form of slag and are divided
into one grade, namely, Grade 9.
4.5 Classification and grading of magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps shall meet the
requirements in Table 1.
4.6 Both the supplier and the buyer can also refer to Appendix A (informative) for the detailed
classification and grading principles of magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps specified; and
refer to Appendix B (informative) for the arrangement of scrap codes.
Magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps shall be submitted for acceptance in batches; and each
batch shall consist of scraps of the same grade.
6.3 Inspection items
The inspection items of magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps shall be negotiated by both
parties. The supplier should provide the alloy designation of each batch of magnesium and
magnesium alloy scraps.
6.4 Sampling
The sampling method for chemical composition analysis of magnesium and magnesium alloy
scraps and arbitration shall be negotiated by both parties; and arbitration sampling shall be
jointly conducted by both parties.
6.5 Judgment of test results
When the classification and grading or the chemical composition of magnesium and magnesium
alloy scraps do not meet the provisions of this Standard, the supplier and purchaser shall
negotiate to resolve it.
7 Marking, Packaging, Transportation and Storage
7.1 Marking
The outer packaging of magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps shall be marked with signs or
labels of the following elements of scraps, such as class, grade, alloy designation (can be
omitted), weight, and date.
7.2 Packaging, transportation and storage
Magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps are packaged in woven bags or iron drums; or in a
packaging method agreed upon by both the supplier and the purchaser. During transportation,
it shall be transported separately and waterproof and fireproof measures shall be taken;
measures shall be taken to prevent scraps of different grades from being mixed up during
transportation. It shall be stored in a ventilated and dry environment; and it is forbidden to store
together with oxidants and acidic substances. It is strictly forbidden to mix explosives, closed
containers, flammable substances, toxic substances, etc. during transportation and storage.
7.3 Quality certificate
Each batch of magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps shall be accompanied by a quality
certificate that meets the requirements of this Standard, indicating:
