Scope

This Standard specifies a test method for the determination of sulfur content in petroleum and
petroleum products using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry.
This Standard is applicable to the determination of petroleum and petroleum products that are
single-phase and liquid at ambient or moderately elevated temperatures, or are soluble in
hydrocarbon solvents; these include automotive gasoline, ethanol-blended gasoline, diesel fuel,
biodiesel and its blends, jet fuel, kerosene, other distillate fuels, naphtha, residual fuel, crude
oil, lubricating base oils, hydraulic fluids, and similar petroleum products.
This Standard is applicable to the determination of sulfur mass fractions in the range of 0.0017%
(17 mg/kg) to 4.6% (46 000 mg/kg).
