Foreword
GB/T 16903 is one of the series national standards of Rules for the Presentation of
Graphical Symbols. The structure and name of this series of national standards are as
follows.
a) GB/T 16900 Rules for the Presentation of Graphical Symbols General Provisions.
b) GB/T 16901 Rules for the Presentation of Graphical Symbols for Use on Technical
Documents is divided into the following there parts.
——Part 1. Basic rules;
——Part 2. The computer electronic document formats specifications and its exchange
requirements of graphical symbols (including the graphical symbols in reference symbol
library);
——Part 3. Classification of connection points, networks and their encoding.
c) GB/T 16902 Rules for the Presentation of Graphical Symbols for Use on Equipment
is divided into the following four parts.
——Part 1. Prototype symbol;
——Part 2. Form and use of the arrow;
——Part 3. Application guidelines;
——Part 4. Applicable rules for the graphical symbol (icon) for use on screen and display.
d) GB/T 16903 Rules for the Presentation of Graphical Symbols for Use on Signs is
divided into following two parts.
——Part 1. Design principles for public information graphical symbols;
——Part 2. Test procedure.
This Part is Part 1 of GB/T 16903. The consistency degree of this Part and ISO
22727.2007 Graphic Symbol Public Information Graphic Symbol Design Requirements (in
English) is non-equivalent. This Part is re-drafted in accordance with ISO 22727.2007.
This Part substitutes GB/T 16903.1-1997 Rules for the Presentation of Graphical Symbols
for Use on Signs Part I. the Formation of Graphical Symbols and GB/T 14543-1993 Visual
Design Principles on Graphical Symbols for Use on Signs. This Part in comparison with
GB/T 16903.1—1997 and GB/T 14543-1993 has the major changes as follows.
——Adjust the standard application scope into the design of public information graphical
symbols for use on signs.
——Delete the provisions related to signs design in the standard, for example,
"Geometry" (GB/T 16903.1-1997 Chapter 3);
——The terms "Apparent Size" and "Oblique Square" (3.1 and 3.2 in GB/T 16903.1-1997)
is deleted and some of the terms are adjusted according to the provisions of the latest
terminology standards, such as adjusting "Graphic Symbol Elements" to "Symbol
Elements" (3.1 in GB/T 14543-1993 and 3.3 in this Part);
——The design template of original public information graphic symbol is modified and the
design template of public information graphic symbol with negative straight bars is
increased (7.1 in GB/T 14543-1993 and 7.1 and 7.2 in this Part).
Annex A and Annex B are informative Annexes in this Part.
This Part is under jurisdiction of National Technical Committee of Standardization for
Graphic Symbol (SAC/TC 59).
This Part is drafted by the following organizations. China National Institute of
Standardization, Xu Beihong Art Institute of Renmin University of China and Beijing
Subway Line Company.
Main drafters of this Part. Chen Yongquan, Bai Dianyi, Zhang Liang, Zou Chuanyu, An
Yaoshun, Zhou Ke.
The original standard was firstly issued in 1986 (the standard No. is GB/T 7093.4-1986),
while in the first amendment in 1997, the standard No. was changed to GB/T
16903.1-1997. This is the second revision.

1 Scope
This Part of GB/T 16903 specified the design principles and requirements for public
information graphical symbols.
This Part applies to the design of public information graphical symbols for use on signs.
This Part does not apply to the design of safety signs and traffic signs.
2 Normative References
The articles contained in the following documents have become this standard when they
are quoted herein. For the dated documents so quoted, all the modifications (excluding
corrections) or revisions made thereafter shall not be applicable to this Standard. For the
undated documents so quoted, the latest editions shall be applicable to this Standard.

Terms defined in GB/T 15565 as well as the following definitions and terms shall apply to
this Part of GB/T 16903. For convenience, some terms in GB/T 15565 are listed as
follows.

Mainly characterized by graph, and the transmission of information does not depend on
the language.

The method to represent and affirm the opposite or negate the existence of specific

The symbol element that negates the original meaning of the graphical symbol
[GB T 15565.1-2008, definition 3.9]
6.1.2 During the design of public information graphic symbols, the possible negative
form shall be considered, so as to reduce the impact of easy-comprehensibility when
adding negative element onto the graphic symbols.
6.1.3 When the design of public information graphic symbols including human shape
and water body, the rules given in Annex A and Annex B shall be referred.
6.2 Use of the template
Public information graphical symbol shall be designed according to the template given in
Chapter 7. In design, the symbol elements in graphic symbols shall not exceed the <...
