Foreword
GB/T 16422 Plastics – Methods of Exposure to Laboratory Light Source is divided into
the following four parts.
--- Part 1. General Guidance;
--- Part 2. Xenon-Arc Lamps;
--- Part 3. Fluorescent UV Lamps;
--- Part 4. Open-Flame Carbon-Arc Lamps.
This Part belongs to Part 4 of GB/T 16422.
This Standard was drafted as per the rules specified in GB/T 1.1-2009.
This Part replaces GB/T 16422.4-1996 Plastics – Methods of Exposure to Laboratory
Light Sources – Part 4. Open-Flame Carbon-Arc Lamps; compared with GB/T
16422.4-1996, this Part mainly has the following changes.
--- Add typical spectral irradiance comparison diagram using three light-filters’
open-flame carbon-arc lamps, and with sunlight is within the pass band of
250nm~800nm, and 250nm~400nm in the Table 4 of CIE 85.1989; as well as
add typical UV spectral energy distribution using three light-filters’ open-flame
carbon-arc lamps (see 4.1);
--- Increase the number of samples recommended for each test (see Chapter 5);
--- Add the air temperature provision against the test chamber (see 6.1);
--- Add the provision that “if irradiator is not used, then the test exposure duration
shall be recommended” (see 7.3);
--- Delete Appendix “Performance and Specifications of Light Source” (see
Appendix A in 1996 Edition);
--- Delete Appendix “Carbon-Arc Lamp Filters” (see Appendix B in 1996 Edition);
--- Delete Appendix “Typical Test Equipment” (see Appendix C in 1996 Edition).
This Part’s translation equivalently adopts ISO 4892-4.2004 Plastics – Methods of
Exposure to Laboratory Light Sources – Part 4. Open-Flame Carbon-Arc Lamps.
Chinese documents that have consistent relationship with international documents in
normative references of this Part are as follows.

in Properties after Exposure to Daylight under Glass, Natural Weathering or
Laboratory Light Sources (ISO 4582.2007, IDT)
This Part incorporates the technical errata contents of ISO 4892-4.2004/Cor.1.2005,
the terms and clauses of which are indicated by the vertical double-line (‖) at the

Plastics – Methods of Exposure to Laboratory Light
Sources – Part 4. Open-Flame Carbon-Arc Lamps
1 Scope
This Part of GB/T 16422 specifies methods for exposing specimens to open-flame
carbon-arc lamps in the presence of moisture to reproduce the weathering effects that
occur when materials are exposed in actual end-use environments in daylight or
daylight filtered through window glass.
This Part is applicable to plastics weathering-resistance assessment and inter-plastics
weathering-resistance comparison test under the condition of carbon-arc light source
exposure.
The specimens are exposed to filtered open-flame carbon-arc light under controlled
environmental conditions (temperature, moisture). Various filters are described.
Specimen preparation and evaluation of the results are covered in other International
Standards for specific materials.
General guidance is given in GB/T 16422.1.
