Summary	This standard is applicable to semiconductor controllers and starters for AC motors that are expected to be connected to circuits with a rated voltage not exceeding 1 000 V AC, which may have a mechanical switchgear in series. This standard specifies the characteristics of the semiconductor controller and starter for AC motors with or without bypass switches during use. The semiconductor controller and starter for AC motors covered by this standard are generally not used to break short-circuit currents. It is advisable to use appropriate short-circuit protection appliances (see 8.2.5) to form part of the equipment, but it is not necessary for semiconductor controllers and starters. Therefore, this standard specifies the requirements for the use of a semiconductor controller and starter for AC motors for use with separate short-circuit protection appliances.
