Foreword
GB/T 12705 "Textile - Methods of testing the down-proof properties of fabrics"
consists of the following two parts.
Part 1. Rubbing test;
Part 2. Tumble test.
This Part is Part 2 of GB/T 12705.
This Part replaces GB/T 12705-1991 "Methods of testing the down-proof properties of
fabrics."
Compared with GB/T 12705-1991, the main differences are as follows.
- CHANGE the standard name to "Textile - Methods of testing the down-proof
properties of fabrics - Part2. Tumble test";
- DELETE the original reference standard. ADD GB/T 8629 in the normative
references;
- ADJUST the down filler specified in routine test from several kinds to one kind.
ADD the down filler in the down products corresponding to the fabrics be tested;
- ADD the washing procedures of sample bag;
- ADD the evaluation of the down-proof properties of fabrics;
- DELETE the original Annex A, MODIFY the contents and ADJUST it to be
Chapter 7 (refer to 7.3) of this Part.
Annex A of this Part is informative.
This Part was proposed by the China Textile Industry Association.
This Part shall be under the jurisdiction of the Basic Standard Branch of the National

Textile – Methods of testing the down-proof properties
of fabrics – Part 2. Tumble test
1 Scope
This Part of GB/T 12705 specifies the method of using tumble test to determine the
down-proof properties of fabrics.
This Part applies various kinds of fabrics used to produce the down products. Down
products may reference to this Part according to the actual situations.
2 Normative references
The provisions in following documents become the provisions of this Part through
reference in this Part of GB/T 12705. For dated references, the subsequent
amendments (excluding corrections) or revisions do not apply to this Standard,
however, parties who reach an agreement based on this Standard are encouraged to
study if the latest versions of these documents are applicable. For undated references,
the latest edition of the referenced document applies.
GB/T 6529 Textiles - Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing (GB/T
6529-2008, ISO 139. 2005, MOD)
GB/T 8629-2001 Textiles - Domestic washing and drying procedures for textile
testing (eqv ISO 6330. 2000)
3 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this Part of GB/T 12705.
3.1
down-proof properties
The properties of fabrics that prevent feathers, down, and velvet from piercing out of
the surface. It is represented by the number of down that pierces out under specified
conditions.
4 Principle
MAKE the sample INTO a sample bag with certain size. PACK with a certain quality of
ends shall be with back-needle of 0.5cm~1cm. The effective size of the sample bags
after sewn is about 40cm×40cm.
7.2.5 USE glue-seal sealant to seal the seams of the sample bags, so as to prevent
the feathers, down, and velvet from piercing out from the seams in testing process,
and affecting the test results.
Note. The sample bags or down products made in other sizes and specifications can be tested
according to this Part. However, the results are not comparable; thus the down-proof properties is not
able to be evaluated.
7.3 Washing and drying procedures of sample bags
If it is necessary to test and evaluate the down-proof properties of washed samples,
then, WASH the sample bags (7.2) according to the 5A procedure in GB/T 8629-2001;
DRY according to the F procedure in GB/T 8629-2001. If using other washing and
drying procedures, it shall be noted in the test report.
7.4 Humidifying and testing
HUMIDIFY and TEST in the atmosphere specified in GB/T 6529.
8 Test procedures
8.1 CLEAR and CLEAN the feathers, down, and velvet from inside and outside of the
rotary case of test instrument. CLEAN the hard rubber balls. And PLACE 10 balls in
the rotary case.
8.2 CLEAR and CLEAN carefully the feathers, down, and velvet remained on the
outer surface of the sample bags to be tested when sewing. Then PUT it into the
rotary case, one sample bag each time.
8.3 PRESET the revolution number of counter to 1000 times. START the button
according to forward direction. Then the rotary case begins to rotate.
8.4 When the rotary case stops automatically after the full-number is reached, TAKE
out the sample bag. Carefully CHECK and COUNT the number of feathers, down, and
velvet that pierces out. Then CHECK and COUNT the number of feathers, down, and
velvet that pierces out in the rotary case and on the rubber balls, and TAKE them out.
8.5 PUT the sample bag into rotary case again. RESET the counter to zero. START
the button according to reverse direction. The rotary case rotates reversely for 1000
times. After the full-number is reached and the rotary case stops automatically,
REPEAT 8.4. SUM up the two counts of the number of feathers, down, and velvet.
That is the test result of one sample bag.
