Road traffic signs and markings - Part 2: Road traffic signs
1 Scope
This document specifies the requirements for the classification, color, shape, character,
size, patterns, setting, use, maintenance, production of road traffic signs.
This document applies to all kinds of road traffic signs on roads, urban roads, places
under the jurisdiction of the organization but allowing social motor vehicles to pass,
including squares, public parking lots and other places used for public passage.
2 Normative references
The contents of the following documents constitute essential provisions of this
document through normative references in the text. Among them, for dated references,
only the version corresponding to the date applies to this document; for undated
references, the latest version (including all amendments) is applicable to this document.

3 Terms and definitions
There are no terms and definitions, that need to be defined, in this document.
4 General
4.1 Basic requirements
4.1.1 Road traffic signs convey traffic control and guidance information to road users,
through colors, shapes, characters, patterns, etc.
4.1.2 Road traffic signs shall comply with the following principles:
a) Meet the needs of road users;
b) Cause the attention of road users;
c) Convey clear, concise meaning;
d) Obtain road user's compliance;
e) Provide adequate time for a reasonable response by road users.
4.1.3 The phenomenon of insufficient or overloaded information shall be prevented.
4.1.4 Important information may be reasonably repeated.
4.1.5 When the signs and markings are used together, they shall have the same meaning,
complement each other; they shall not cause ambiguity; they shall be coordinated with
other facilities; they shall not contradict the signal lights.
Note: The road traffic markings, in the example in this document, are for illustration only.
4.2 Classification
4.2.1 The road traffic signs are divided into primary signs and auxiliary signs, according
to their functions:
a) The primary sign consists of:
1) Prohibition signs: The signs prohibiting or restricting the traffic behavior of
road users;
2) Indication signs: The signs indicating that road users shall follow;
3) Warning signs: The signs warning road users to pay attention to roads and
traffic;
4) Guide signs: The signs that convey road direction, location, distance
information;
5) Signs of tourist attractions: The signs that provide directions and distances of
tourist attractions;
6) Notification signs: The signs that inform off-street facilities, safe driving
information and other information.
b) Auxiliary signs are signs, which are located below the primary signs, to provide
auxiliary explanations.
4.2.2 Road traffic signs are divided into roadside signs and overhead signs, according
to their display positions.
4.2.3 Road traffic signs are divided into static signs and variable information signs,
according to the display method of layout content.
4.2.4 Road traffic signs are divided into three types: retroreflective signs, illuminated
signs, luminous signs, according to their optical characteristics, among which the

Road traffic signs and markings - Part 2: Road traffic signs
1 Scope
This document specifies the requirements for the classification, color, shape, character,
size, patterns, setting, use, maintenance, production of road traffic signs.
This document applies to all kinds of road traffic signs on roads, urban roads, places
under the jurisdiction of the organization but allowing social motor vehicles to pass,
including squares, public parking lots and other places used for public passage.
2 Normative references
The contents of the following documents constitute essential provisions of this
document through normative references in the text. Among them, for dated references,
only the version corresponding to the date applies to this document; for undated
references, the latest version (including all amendments) is applicable to this document.

3 Terms and definitions
There are no terms and definitions, that need to be defined, in this document.
4 General
4.1 Basic requirements
4.1.1 Road traffic signs convey traffic control and guidance information to road users,
through colors, shapes, characters, patterns, etc.
4.1.2 Road traffic signs shall comply with the following principles:
a) Meet the needs of road users;
b) Cause the attention of road users;
c) Convey clear, concise meaning;
d) Obtain road user's compliance;
e) Provide adequate time for a reasonable response by road users.
4.1.3 The phenomenon of insufficient or overloaded information shall be prevented.
4.1.4 Important information may be reasonably repeated.
4.1.5 When the signs and markings are used together, they shall have the same meaning,
complement each other; they shall not cause ambiguity; they shall be coordinated with
other facilities; they shall not contradict the signal lights.
Note: The road traffic markings, in the example in this document, are for illustration only.
4.2 Classification
4.2.1 The road traffic signs are divided into primary signs and auxiliary signs, according
to their functions:
a) The primary sign consists of:
1) Prohibition signs: The signs prohibiting or restricting the traffic behavior of
road users;
2) Indication signs: The signs indicating that road users shall follow;
3) Warning signs: The signs warning road users to pay attention to roads and
traffic;
4) Guide signs: The signs that convey road direction, location, distance
information;
5) Signs of tourist attractions: The signs that provide directions and distances of
tourist attractions;
6) Notification signs: The signs that inform off-street facilities, safe driving
information and other information.
b) Auxiliary signs are signs, which are located below the primary signs, to provide
auxiliary explanations.
4.2.2 Road traffic signs are divided into roadside signs and overhead signs, according
to their display positions.
4.2.3 Road traffic signs are divided into static signs and variable information signs,
according to the display method of layout content.
4.2.4 Road traffic signs are divided into three types: retroreflective signs, illuminated
