Road traffic signs and markings - Part 2: Road traffic signs
1 Scope
This document specifies the requirements for the classification, color, shape, character, size, patterns, setting, use, maintenance, production of road traffic signs. This document applies to all kinds of road traffic signs on roads, urban roads, places under the jurisdiction of the organization but allowing social motor vehicles to pass, including squares, public parking lots and other places used for public passage. 2 Normative references

Among them, for dated references, only the version corresponding to the date applies to this document; for undated references, the latest version (including all amendments) is applicable to this document. 3 Terms and definitions
There are no terms and definitions, that need to be defined, in this document. 4 General
4.1 Basic requirements
4.1.1 Road traffic signs convey traffic control and guidance information to road users, through colors, shapes, characters, patterns, etc.
4.1.2 Road traffic signs shall comply with the following principles:
a) Meet the needs of road users;
b) Cause the attention of road users;
c) Convey clear, concise meaning;
d) Obtain road user's compliance;
e) Provide adequate time for a reasonable response by road users.
4.1.3 The phenomenon of insufficient or overloaded information shall be prevented. 4.1.4 Important information may be reasonably repeated.
4.1.5 When the signs and markings are used together, they shall have the same meaning, complement each other; they shall not cause ambiguity; they shall be coordinated with other facilities; they shall not contradict the signal lights.
Note: The road traffic markings, in the example in this document, are for illustration only. 4.2 Classification
4.2.1 The road traffic signs are divided into primary signs and auxiliary signs, according to their functions:
a) The primary sign consists of:
1) Prohibition signs: The signs prohibiting or restricting the traffic behavior of road users;
2) Indication signs: The signs indicating that road users shall follow; 3) Warning signs: The signs warning road users to pay attention to roads and traffic;
4) Guide signs: The signs that convey road direction, location, distance information;
5) Signs of tourist attractions: The signs that provide directions and distances of tourist attractions;
6) Notification signs: The signs that inform off-street facilities, safe driving information and other information.
b) Auxiliary signs are signs, which are located below the primary signs, to provide auxiliary explanations.
4.2.2 Road traffic signs are divided into roadside signs and overhead signs, according to their display positions.
4.2.3 Road traffic signs are divided into static signs and variable information signs, according to the display method of layout content.
4.2.4 Road traffic signs are divided into three types: retroreflective signs, illuminated signs, luminous signs, according to their optical characteristics, among which the illuminated signs are further divided into internally illuminated signs and externally illuminated signs, according to the installation position of the light source. 4.2.5 The road traffic signs are divided into permanent signs and temporary signs, according to the setting time limit. Road traffic signs, which are used in areas where road conditions have changed, due to construction work or traffic accident management, are temporary signs.
4.2.6 Road traffic signs are divided into compulsory signs and non-compulsory signs, according to the mandatory degree of the information conveyed by the signs. Prohibition signs and indication signs are signs that road users must follow; other signs are only informational, such as guide signs, tourist attraction signs.
The stop-to-give-way signs and the deceleration-to-give-way signs, in the prohibition signs, shall not be superimposed. Other prohibition signs and indication signs should not be superimposed. For other prohibition signs and indication signs, than the stop-to- give-way signs and the deceleration-to-give-way signs, which are superimposed on white frameless bottom plate, they are mandatory signs.
For the stop-to-give-way signs and the deceleration-to-give-way signs, which are superimposed on other signs, to provide the information only related to prohibition, restriction, compliance, as a supplementary description or prediction, they are non- mandatory signs.
4.3 Color
4.3.1 The basic meanings of the colors of traffic signs are as shown in Table 1. the work zone OR the traffic incident management zone.
4.6.8 The height of the guide signs, which are set in the tunnel, shall be selected, according to the design speed or speed limit. When the headroom is limited, the information can be reduced, OR the content of a piece of sign can be reasonably divided and set, after demonstration.
4.7 Patterns
The use of graphic signs, other than those specified in this document, is a trial sign, which shall be implemented, in accordance with the procedures specified in GB 5768.1; meanwhile auxiliary signs shall be added, to explain the meaning.
4.8 Settings
4.8.1 Road traffic signs should be set on the right side of the road in the direction of vehicle travel, OR on the left side of the road in the direction of vehicle travel, OR on both sides at the same time, OR above the road, according to specific conditions. 4.8.2 To ensure visibility, where more than two signs need to be set at the same location, they should be installed on one support structure, BUT it shall not exceed 4 at most. 4.8.3 In principle, it shall avoid the juxtaposition of different types of primary signs, such as prohibition signs and guide signs.
4.8.4 The stop-to-give-way signs, the deceleration-to-give-way signs, the speed limit release signs, the overtaking prohibition signs, the overtaking prohibition release signs, the priority over oncoming vehicle signs, the give way to oncoming vehicle signs should be set up separately. If it cannot be set independently, due to restrictions of conditions, there shall not be more than two signs on a support structure; the auxiliary signs are not counted.
4.8.5 Warning signs shall not be set on a support structure, together with stop-to-give- way signs and deceleration-to-give-way signs. Warning signs should not be set up too much. When more than two warning signs need to be set, at the same location, in principle, only the most needed one is set.
4.8.6 For the signs juxtaposed on a support structure, they shall be installed from top to bottom and from left to right, in the order of prohibition signs, indication signs, warning signs.
4.8.7 Prohibition signs and indication signs shall be placed at the beginning of prohibition, restriction or compliance. At appropriate positions in front of the intersection of the road segment, where some prohibition sign starts, it should set corresponding guide signs, so that the prohibited and restricted vehicles can take action 1) The internal lighting signs shall be structurally designed, according to the size of the board, the subjected wind force, etc.;
2) Ensure that the illumination of the sign board is uniform; there is a visual recognition distance of more than 150 m, at night;
3) The metal components shall be qualified for anti-corrosion treatment, rain- proof and dust-proof; the electrical components are durable and reliable, the maintenance is convenient.
c) For external lighting, the light source is installed at the lower front of the outside of the sign, OR at other appropriate positions, to illuminate the sign surface. The requirements are as follows:
1) The color rendering index (Ra) of the external lighting source shall not be lower than 80; the light source shall be specially designed; the lighting fixture and its shadow shall not affect the reading of the sign;
2) The illuminance of the light source, on the sign surface, shall be uniform; the ratio of the maximum illuminance to the minimum illuminance shall be less than 4; the visual distance shall be more than 150 m, at night;
3) The external lighting source shall not cause glare;
4) The metal components, which support the lighting fixtures, shall be qualified for anti-corrosion treatment; the electrical components are durable and reliable, the maintenance is convenient.
4.8.17 The luminous signs work normally and stably. It meets the following requirements:
