Bursting disc safety devices –
Part 2. Application, selection and installation
1 Scope
1.1 This Part of GB 567 specifies the basic technical requirements on the application,
selection, and installation of bursting disc safety devices.
1.2 This Part is applicable for the following bursting disc safety devices.
-- This Part is applicable for the bursting disc safety devices that are used by pressure
vessel, pressure piping or other sealed pressure-bearing equipment (hereinafter
referred to as pressure-bearing equipment) to prevent overpressure or the
appearance of excessive vacuum.
-- This Part is applicable for the bursting disc safety devices of which the bursting
pressure is not higher than 500 MPa and not lower than 0.001 MPa.
1.3 This Part is applicable for the following bursting disc safety devices.
-- In the operation process, the pressure-bearing equipment which may produce
pressure explosion, and of which the reaction velocity reaches detonation.
-- The bursting disc safety devices used in national military defense equipment which
have special requirements.
Note. Phenomenon that is generated very differently from the common burning and explosion
when the burning rate of the material is quickly, above 1 000m/s, is known as detonation.

3 Terms and definitions
The terms and definitions defined by GB 567.1 AND the following terms and definitions are
applicable for this document.
3.1
Maximum allowable operating pressure
The maximum gauge pressure that can be borne by the top of the protected pressure-
bearing equipment, at the specified temperature. This pressure is the minimum value that
is calculated based on the effective thickness of the pressure-bearing components of the
protected pressure-bearing equipment, in consideration of the load of these components.
3.2
Operating pressure
The maximum pressure that the top of the protected pressure-bearing equipment may
reach, under normal working condition
3.3
Operating pressure ratio
The ratio OF the working pressure of the protected pressure-bearing equipment TO the
minimum bursting pressure of bursting disc.
3.4
Pressure relief system
When the internal fluid of the protected pressure-bearing equipment exceeds the specified
pressure, the system which can relieve fluid safely, including valves, pipe fitting, pressure
relieving device and relieving pipe, etc.
3.5
Relieving pressure
The maximum pressure that the inlet side of pressure relieving device may reach, during
pressure relieving.
3.6
Relieving temperature
The temperature at the inlet side of relieving device, during pressure relieving.
3.7
Replacement period
The interval of bursting disc from installation-service to replacement.
4. Application
4.1 General requirements
4.1.1 Bursting disc safety device shall not only satisfy this Part of standard but also the
relevant safety technical standards.
4.1.2 Bursting disc safety device can be used independently, and can also be used with
safety valve as a combined relieving device.
4.2 Independent use of bursting disc safety device
4.2.1 If one of the following conditions is satisfied, for the protected pressure-bearing
equipment, an independent bursting disc safety device shall be used as overpressure
relieving device.
a) Pressure within vessel rises so rapidly that safety valve cannot respond in time;
b) In design, it does not allow that there is a leakage of trace amount of medium in
vessel;
c) Precipitates or adhesive materials generated from medium in vessel might lead to
the failure of safety valve;
d) Safety valve cannot operate normally due to low temperature;
e) Safety valve is not applicable due to large vent area or over-high (low) relieving
pressure, etc.
4.2.2 For movable pressure vessel, unless otherwise specified in the relevant standards,
the protected pressure-bearing equipment such as long-pipe trailer and pipe-bundle
container may use bursting disc safety device as single overpressure relieving device.
4.2.3 For the protected pressure-bearing equipment which is often used at the conditions
of overpressure or greatly variable temperature, independent bursting disc safety device
shall not be used as overpressure relieving device.
4.3 Combined use of bursting disc safety device and safety valve
4.3.1 Combined formation of bursting disc safety device and safety valve
Because of the different connection modes for bursting disc safety device and safety valve
and the corresponding locations, there are three combined forms as follows.
a) Bursting disc safety device is connected to the inlet side of safety valve in series, as
shown in Figure 1 a);
b) Bursting disc safety device is connected to the outlet side of safety valve in series,
as shown in Figure 1 b);
considered. For the types of bursting disc, refer to Annex A.
5.2.2 Select the suitable type and structure of bursting disc to ensure the long service life
of bursting disc safety device.
5.2.3 The bursting disc safety device used in explosive hazard medium shall satisfy the
following requirements.
a) Do not generate flame during the bursting of bursting disc;
b) When connected with safety valve in series, do not generate debris during bursting.
5.2.4 For the main technical parameters of bursting disc safety device, refer to Annex B.
5.3 Selection of bursting disc materials
5.3.1 Aluminum, nickel, austenitic stainless steel, Inconel, Monel or graphite bursting disc
can be used based on the working conditions and structure features of the protected
pressure-bearing equipment. Unless otherwise specified, titanium and hastelloy bursting
disc can also be used. For the maximum service temperature of normal materials, refer to
Annex A of GB 567.1-2012.
5.3.2 If it is used in corrosive environment and may lead to the failure of bursting disc safety
