Determination of Relative Density of Foods
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the determination method for relative density of liquid sample.
This Standard is applicable to the determination for relative density of liquid sample.
Method One - Density bottle method
2 Principle
At 20??C, respectively determine the masses of water filled with the same density bottle and sample. The volume of density bottle, i.e., sample volume, is determined by water mass. Calculate the sample density by sample?€?s mass and volume. The ratio of sample density to water density is the relative density of the sample.
3 Apparatus
3.1 Density bottle. precision density bottle, as shown in Figure 1.
10 Expressions of analysis results
Calculate the relative density of sample at 20??C according to equation (2). where,
d - relative density of sample;
P1 - reading of balance rider when floating hammer is immersed in water, in grams (g);
P2 - reading of balance rider when floating hammer is immersed in sample, in grams (g).
The calculated results represent the effective digits (nearest to 0.001) of the Wechsler relative density balance accuracy.
11 Precision
The absolute difference between the two independent determinations
obtained under reproducible conditions shall not exceed 5% of the arithmetic mean.
Method Three - Proportion method
12 Principle
The hydrometer uses the Archimedes principle to pour the testing liquid into a higher container. Put the hydrometer into the liquid. Hydrometer is subsided to a certain height then appears the floating state. At this time, the position of the liquid surface on the glass tube corresponding to the scale is the density of the liquid. The ratio of the measured density of the sample to the water is the relative density.
