Leachate - Determination of total dissolved solids and total

1 Subject content and scope of application
This standard specifies the filter specifications and measurement procedures, for the determination of total dissolved solids and total suspended solids in leachate. This standard applies to the liquid, which is leached out from domestic waste. 2 Terminology
Total dissolved solids refer to the total residue left, after the filtrate passed through the specified size filter AND is evaporated and dried at 103 ~ 105 ??C.
Total suspended solids are all solids, which are retained by the filter AND dried at 103 ~ 105 ??C; or the difference of the total solids minus total dissolved solids can be used as the calculated value of total suspended solids.
3 Principles
Pass the leachate sample through the filter paper of the specified specification. Absorb the filtered filtrate quantitatively. Place it in an evaporating dish of known mass with a lid. First evaporate it to dryness on a water bath. Then dry it in a drying oven, at 103 ~ 105 ??C to constant temperature. The increased mass of the evaporating dish is the total dissolved solids.
Total suspended solids are obtained, by subtracting total dissolved solids from total solids.
4 Instruments and equipment
Analytical instruments commonly used in laboratories, and:
4.1 Conical flask, 250 mL.
4.2 Long-neck glass funnel: diameter is 75 mm.
4.3 Quantitative filter paper: Medium speed, diameter is 125 mm.
4.4 Water bath.
4.5 Dryer.
4.6 Pipette: 50.0 mL.
4.7 Evaporating dish with lid: 100 mL.
5 Samples
The amount of leachate laboratory sample, for the determination of total dissolved solids and total suspended solids, shall include the amount used for total solids determination, a total of about 500 mL; it shall be determined as soon as possible after sampling. Otherwise, use polyethylene or glass bottles to store it at a temperature of 2 ~ 5 ??C, for a maximum storage duration of 24 h.
6 Steps
6.1 Make the leachate laboratory sample solution pass through the medium-speed quantitative filter paper (4.3), into the conical flask (4.1), to obtain the filtrate. 6.2 Put the cleaned and numbered evaporating dish (4.7) in a drying oven. Bake at 103 ~ 105 ??C for about 1 h. Put it in a dryer, to cool for 30 minutes. Weigh it. Bake for another 30 minutes. Cool down. Weigh it, until reaching the constant weight (the difference between the two weightings is less than 0.4 mg).
6.3 Use a pipette, to take 50.0 mL of filtrate, into an evaporating dish, which reached constant weight. Put it on a water bath, to evaporate it. Then transfer it to a drying oven, to dry it for 1 h at 103 ~ 105 ??C. Cool it in a dryer for 30 min. Weigh it. Repeat drying, cooling, weighing, until reaching constant weight (the difference between the two weightings is less than 0.4 mg).
7 Presentation of results
