Petroleum products - Determination of colority
1. Subject content and applicable scope
This Standard specifies the determination method of colority of petroleum products.
This Standard is applicable for various kinds of petroleum products, such as lubricating oil,
kerosene and diesel etc.
2. Normative references
GB/T 6540 Petroleum products - Determination of color
3. Method summary
Inject sample into colorimetric tube; then compare it with the standard color glass-plate;
take the corresponding color-number as the colority of this sample.
4. Instruments and materials
4.1 Instruments
4.1.1 Colorimeter. it is made up of light-source, standard color-wheel, prism and
observation eyepiece etc., and equipped with colorimetric tube (see annex A). Colorimeter
shall be adjusted when exiting the factory, so as the luminosity of view in two half parts is
consistent.
4.1.2 Colorimetric tube. the inner diameter is 32.5~33.4mm, the height is 120~130mm, it
is the flat bottomed cylinder which is made from colorless and transparent glass (see annex
A).
4.2 Materials
4.2.1 Kerosene. it is used for diluting the dark-colored oil. It is water-white, and shall not
be higher than No.1 colority of this Standard.
4.2.2 Lens wiping paper.
5. Preparatory work
Annex A
Technical conditions of colorimeter of petroleum products
(Supplement)
Colorimeter. it is made up of light-source, standard color-wheel, prism and observation
eyepiece etc., and equipped with colorimetric tube. The instrument shall be designed such
that it only reflects the light of light-source and is not subject to the disturbance of any
foreign light which will interfere the observation.
Light-source of instrument, after going through the filtering-light, shall produce two parallel
light-beams which are of the completely same-size and same-shape; one parallel light-
beam goes through the standard color glass-plate; the other light-beam goes through the
sample, and enters into eyepiece at the same time for the chromaticity comparison by
observer.
A1 Light-source
Light-source can be separated alone or made into a part of the whole colorimetric
instrument; take the 220V, 100W, 2750±50K frosted bulb as the light-source. After the light-
source goes through milky glass film and solar filter glass film, its spectral characteristic is
similar to north-light.
The instrument’s light-source, after going through filtering-light, forms two parallel light-
beams; they are of completely same-size and same-shape; they can uniformly illuminate
on the color glass-plate in the standard color-wheel and on the sample in colorimetric tube
respectively, and enter into the eyepiece after going through prism and reflector.
For qualified daylight filtering glass, its radiant-energy transmissivity at 410nm, in the
spectrophotometric test, shall not be smaller than 0.6; its radiant-energy transmissivity
shall be lower than 0.10 when its smooth curve descends to 700nm; it is also required that
the radiant-energy transmissivity at 570nm shall not exceed 0.03 of the connection-line of
radiant-energy transmissivity at 540nm and 590nm; its radiant-energy transmissivity at
700nm shall also not exceed 0.03 of the radiant-energy transmissivity at any relatively
shorter wavelength.
A2 Colorimetric tube
The flat bottomed cylinder is made of the colorless and transparent glass, with the following
sizes.
The inner diameter. 32.5~33.4mm;
The wall thickness. 1.2~2.0mm;
The total height. 120~130mm.
Annex B
Preparation method of colorimetric solution used to test standard color-films
(Supplement)
B.1 Colorimetric solution is made up of the following solution.
B1.1 Sulfuric acid solution (H2SO4)
Slowly inject 1 mL of sulfuric acid (analytically pure), of which the density is 1.84, into 99mL
of distilled water.
B1.2 Hydrochloric acid solution (HCl)
Slowly inject 10 mL of hydrochloric acid (analytically pure) into 90mL of distilled water.
B1.3 Preparation of 1g/L potassium dichromate solution (K2Cr2O7)
Dissolve 1g of potassium dichromate (analytically pure) with sulfuric acid solution (B1.1);
dilute it to 1000mL; each 1mL of this solution contains 1mg of potassium dichromate.
B1.4 Preparation of 500g/L cobalt sulphate solution (C0SO4·7H2O)
Dissolve 50g of cobalt sulphate (analytically pure) with sulfuric acid solution (B1.1); dilute
it to 100mL; filter for later use.
B1.5 Preparation of 500g/L ferric chloride solution (FeCl3·6H2O)
Dissolve 250g of ferric chloride (analytically pure) with hydrochloric acid solution (B1.2);
dilute it to 500mL; filter for later use.
B1.6 Preparation of 3g/L ammonium thiocyanate solution (NH4CNS)
Dissolve 0.3g of solid ammonium thiocyanate with distilled water; dilute it to 100mL.
B2 Preparation of colorimetric solution
As shown in Table B1, measure volume of various solutions; prepare them into colorimetric
solutions which correspond to various color-numbers.
