National Food Safety Standard - Food Additive -
Sorbitol
1 Scope
This Standard is applicable to food additive - sorbitol. It takes starch as raw
material and can be obtained by hydrolyzation and refined processing of
glucose under high pressure hydrogenation in the presence of a catalyst.
2 Molecular formula, structural formula and relative
molecular mass
2.1 Molecular formula
C6H14O6
2.2 Structural formula
2.3 Relative molecular mass
182.17 (according to international relative atomic mass in 2007)
3 Technical requirements
3.1 Sensory requirements. it shall comply with the provisions in Table 1.
Table 1 Sensory requirements
Item Requirements Inspection method
Color White
Place an appropriate amount of sample in a
clean, dry white porcelain dish; observe its
color and state under natural light. State
Crystalline powder,
flakes or granules, with
moisture absorption
Appendix A
Inspection method
A.1 General provisions
Unless other requirements specified, reagents and water used in this Standard
all refer to analytical reagents and Grade 3 water stipulated in GB/T 6682-2008.
Unless other requirements specified, the standard solution, impurity standard
solution, preparations and products used for test shall be prepared based on
the provisions of GB/T 601, GB/T 602 and GB/T 603. The solution shall refer to
aqueous solution if it is not indicated.
A.2 Identification test
In the test of measuring sorbitol content, the peak retention time in sample
solution chromatogram shall be consistent with that in standard solution
chromatogram.
A.3 Determination of sorbitol (in dry basis)
A.3.1 Method summary
Use high performance liquid chromatography. Under the selected operating
conditions, take water as mobile phase, use high-pressure infusion pump to
pump mobile phase into chromatographic column which is filled with Ca type
strong acid cation exchange resin filler, so as to separate each component in
the sample solution. Use refractive index detector to detect. Record and
process chromatographic signals by data processing system.
A.3.2 Reagents and material
A.3.2.1 Water. Grade 1 water that complies with GB/T 6682-2008.
A.3.2.2 Sorbitol standard sample. purity ≥98%.
A.3.3 Apparatus
High performance liquid chromatography equipped with refractive index
detector
A.3.4 Reference chromatographic conditions
A.3.4.1 Mobile phrase. water (A.3.2.1)
