This standard’s technical requirements modifies and adopts “Vanillin” standard [JECFA
889 (year 2001, Session 57)] formulated by FAO/WHO Joint Expert Committee on Food
Additives (JECFA).
This standard replaces GB 3861-1983 “Food Additive - Vanillin”.
Compared with GB 3861-1983, the main changes of this standard are as follows.
— ADD Chapter “2 Normative References”;
— ADD the determination of content;
— ADD Annex A Typical Gas Chromatogram.
Annex A of this standard is informative.
This standard was proposed by China National Light Industry Council.
This Standard shall be under the jurisdiction of China Technical Committee of
Standardization on Food Additives (CTCSFA).
This standard is drafted by Zhejiang Jiaxing City Zhonghua Chemical Industry Co., Ltd.
and Shanghai Spices Institute.

Food Additive - Vanillin
1 Scope
This standard specifies the requirements, test methods, inspection rules, mark, packing,
transportation, storage and quality warranty period for food additive vanillin.
This standard is applicable to analyzing and evaluating the quality of food additive -
vanillin, which takes guaiacol or sulfite pulp waste lignin as the raw material and is made
by chemical synthesis.
2 Normative references
The articles contained in the following documents have become part of this standard when
they are quoted herein. For the dated documents so quoted, all the modifications
(excluding corrections) or revisions made thereafter shall not be applicable to this
standard. For the undated documents so quoted, the latest editions shall be applicable to
this standard.

3 Product’s chemical name, molecular formula, structural
formula, and relative molecular mass
3.1 Chemical name. 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy benzaldehyde.
6.4 If there is one indicator not conforming to the requirements of this standard in the
acceptance result, then double sampling can be done for re-inspection. If there is still an
unqualified indicator in re-inspection result, then this batch of products are deemed as
unacceptable.
6.5 When the supplier and purchaser have a dispute over product quality, both parties
may solve it through agreement, or the dispute can be arbitrated by legal inspection
agency.
7 Mark, packing, transportation, storage and quality guarantee
period
7.1 Mark
Product outer packing shall be marked with the words “food additive”, product name,
manufacturer name and address, trademark, batch number, net weight, production date,
quality warranty period, license number, and standard number. If there are special
requirements, the customer can sign a separate agreement with manufacturer.
7.2 Packing
Food additive vanillin shall be installed in a clean polyethylene-lined fiber-can or tin-can
without foreign flavor, and be packed according to customer’s requirements.
7.3 Transportation
It shall be handled gently in the transportation process, and shall avoid sunshine and rain.
It must not be mixed with toxic or hazardous substance. It shall meet the regulations of
relevant departments.
7.4 Storage
The product shall be stored in a shady, dry and ventilated warehouse; avoiding foreign
gas contamination and keeping away from fire.
7.5 Quality warranty period
Under the circumstances of required transportation and store conditions, intact packing
and sealing, the product warranty quality period is two years. If it is overdue, inspect
whether it meets the requirements of this standard; if passing the inspection, it can still be
used.
