Foreword
This Standard identically adopts ISO 3270.1984 "Paints and varnishes and their raw
materials - Temperatures and humidities for conditioning and testing" (English version).
For ease of use, this standard makes the following editorial changes to ISO 3270.1984.
a) Change the standard's name;
b) Delete the foreword of ISO 3270.1984.
This Standard replaces GB 9278-1988 "Temperatures and humidities for conditioning
and testing of paint specimens".
The main changes of this Standard compared with GB 9278-1988 are as follows.
- The standard attribute is changed from mandatory national standard to
recommendary national standard;
- The text content has been rewritten in accordance with the text structure that is
equivalent to international standards.
This Standard was proposed by China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association.
This Standard shall be under the jurisdiction of National Technical Committee on Paints
and Pigments of Standardization Administration of China.
The drafting organizations of this Standard. Sinochem builds Changzhou Coatings
Chemical Research Institute.

Temperatures and humidity for conditioning and testing of
paint specimens
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the temperature and relative humidity conditions commonly
used in conditioning and testing of paints, varnishes and their raw materials.
This Standard applies to liquid or powdered paints and varnishes, as well as their wet
or dry films and their raw materials.
2 Normative references
The following documents contain the provisions which, through reference in this
Standard, become the provisions of this Standard. For dated references, their
subsequent amendments (excluding corrigendum) or revisions do not apply to this
Standard. However, the parties who enter into agreement based on this Standard are
encouraged to investigate whether the latest versions of these documents are applicable.
For undated reference documents, the latest versions apply to this Standard.
ISO 558 Conditioning and testing - Standard atmospheres - Definitions
3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions as well as the
terms and definitions defined in ISO 558 apply.
3.1 conditioning atmosphere
The environment in which a specimen or test piece is maintained before being tested.
It is characterized by specified values of temperature and relative humidity or one of
the two parameters. The parameter values are maintained within the specified allowable
values for a specified time. The selected parameter values and the length of time depend
on the nature of the sample or specimen to be tested.
NOTE 1.The term "conditioning" refers to the entire operation of subjecting specimens and test
pieces to specified conditions of temperature and humidity prior to testing and maintaining them in
this conditioning atmosphere for a specified period of time.
NOTE 2.Conditioning can be carried out in a laboratory or in a special box called a "conditioning
box" or a test chamber.
