Aluminum matrix composites - Test method for volume
fraction of SiC - Dissolution method
1 Scope
This document describes the method principle, reagents, instruments and equipment,
analysis steps, result calculation method, and test report for the determination of silicon
carbide particle, whisker, and fiber volume fraction in silicon carbide particle, whisker,
and fiber reinforced aluminum matrix composites.
This document is applicable to the determination of silicon carbide particle, whisker,
and fiber volume fraction in particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites with a
reinforcement particle size greater than 3 μm or whisker and fiber reinforced aluminum
matrix composites with a diameter greater than 3 μm.
2 Normative references
The following documents contain the provisions which, through normative reference in
this document, constitute the essential provisions of this document. For the dated
referenced documents, only the versions with the indicated dates are applicable to this
document; for the undated referenced documents, only the latest version (including all
the amendments) is applicable to this document.
GB/T 603 Chemical reagent - Preparations of reagent solutions for use in test
methods
GB/T 3850 Impermeable sintered metal materials and hardmetals - Determination
of density
GB/T 6682 Water for analytical laboratory use - Specification and test methods
JB/T 11433 Conventional abrasive - Determination of density
3 Principles of the method
An acidic solvent that can dissolve the aluminum matrix but not corrode the silicon
carbide reinforcement is selected to dissolve the sample. The reinforcements are
collected and weighed, and the volume fraction of silicon carbide reinforcements is
calculated according to the mass-to-volume conversion formula.
according to the method specified in GB/T 3850.
6.2.2 The density of silicon carbide reinforcement in aluminum matrix composites shall
be measured according to the method specified in JB/T 11433.
6.3 Preparation of the ceramic crucible
6.3.1 Clean the ceramic crucible and place it in a Muffle furnace at 950 °C until its
weight is constant (the difference between the two weighings shall not exceed 0.3 mg).
6.3.2 Put the constant-weight ceramic crucible in a desiccator for later use.
6.4 Dissolution of the matrix
6.4.1 Weigh the sample according to Table 1 and place it in a polytetrafluoroethylene
beaker, add 30 mL of hydrochloric acid solution (4.3), cover the beaker; after the violent
reaction is over, slowly add the hydrofluoric acid (4.4) dropwise until it is completely
dissolved.
6.4.2 Wash the beaker lid and beaker wall with water, and add hydrogen peroxide (4.5)
dropwise until the solution is clear.
6.4.3 Thoroughly clean the walls of the beaker.
6.4.4 Heat the solution at a low temperature until it is boiling (with large bubbles),
remove the beaker, and cool to room temperature.
6.5 Filtration and constant-weight keeping of reinforcement
6.5.1 Filter the precipitate with quantitative slow filter paper, thoroughly clean the
beaker and filter the cleaning solution.
6.5.2 Clean the filter paper and sediment until there is no more acid residue, then
transfer the filter paper and sediment together to a ceramic crucible with constant
weight.
6.5.3 First incinerate it at 500 °C, then burn at 900 °C±50 °C, take it out and cool it
slightly; transfer it to a desiccator to cool, and weigh it until its weight is constant, the
result is accurate to 0.0001 g.
7 Calculation of results
The volume fraction φr of silicon carbide is calculated according to formula (1), and the
calculation result is retained to three significant figures.
