Textiles - Determination of Benzophenone Ultraviolet
Absorbents
WARNING---the personnel using this Standard shall have formal laboratory work
experience. This Standard does not point out all the possible safety issues. The
user is responsible for taking appropriate safety and health measures and
ensuring compliance with the conditions stipulated by relevant national laws
and regulations.
1 Scope
This Standard specifies a method for the determination of 11 kinds of benzophenone
ultraviolet absorbents in textile products through high-performance liquid
chromatograph - diode array detector (HPLC-DAD).
This Standard is applicable to the determination of benzophenone ultraviolet
absorbents in various types of textile products.

GB/T 6682 Water for Analytical Laboratory Use - Specification and Test Methods
3 Principle
Use methanol to ultrasonically extract the sample; use a filter membrane to filter and
purify it. Then, use high-performance liquid chromatograph - diode array detector
(HPLC-DAD) for determination and confirmation. Adopt the external standard method
for quantification.
4 Reagents
4.1 Unless it is otherwise specified, all used reagents are analytically pure; water is
Grade-1 water specified in GB/T 6682.
4.2 Methanol: chromatographically pure.
4.3 Isopropanol: chromatographically pure.
4.4 Formic acid: chromatographically pure.
4.5 Formic acid solution: 1 mL/L. Measure-take 1 mL of formic acid (4.4); use water to
dissolve it and reach a constant volume of 1,000 mL, then, shake it well.
4.6 Methanol-isopropanol solution containing 1 mL/L formic acid (70 + 30): measure-
take 699 mL of methanol (4.2), 300 mL of isopropanol (4.3) and 1 mL of methanol (4.4);
mix it up and shake it well.
4.7 Benzophenone ultraviolet absorbent standard substance (purity ≥ 98%): see
Appendix A.
4.8 Benzophenone ultraviolet absorbent standard stock solution (1,000 mg/L):
accurately weigh-take the standard substance specified in 4.7, accurate to 0.1 mg; use
methanol (4.2) to dissolve the benzophenone ultraviolet absorbent standard substance
and reach a constant volume; prepare it into a single-component stock solution with a
concentration of 1,000 mg/L.
NOTE: the standard stock solution shall be stored in the dark at 0 °C ~ 4 °C; the validity
period should be 3 months.
4.9 Benzophenone ultraviolet absorbent standard working solution: respectively
transfer-take an appropriate volume of the standard stock solution (4.8); use methanol
(4.2) to dilute it; prepare into standard working solution with different concentrations:
0.0 mg/L, 0.5 mg/L, 1 mg/L, 2 mg/L, 5 mg/L, 10 mg/L and 20 mg/L.
NOTE: the standard working solution shall be stored in the dark at 0 °C ~ 4 °C; the validity
period should be 1 month.
5 Equipment and Instruments
5.1 Extractor: with a sealing plug; about 60 mL; made of hard glass in a tubular form.
5.2 Ultrasonic generator: with a working frequency of 40 kHz.
5.3 Organic phase filter membrane: with a pore size of 0.45 μm.
5.4 Analytical balance: the division value is respectively 0.1 mg and 0.01 g.
5.5 High-performance liquid chromatograph: equipped with a diode array detector.
6 Analytical Procedures
6.1 Sample Preparation and Extraction
7 Result Calculation and Expression
The determination result of this Method shall be respectively expressed in the detection
results of the benzophenone ultraviolet absorbents, and be calculated in accordance
with Formula (1):
Where,
Xi---the content of the benzophenone ultraviolet absorbent i extracted from the sample,
expressed in (mg/kg);
Ai---the peak area (or peak height) of the benzophenone ultraviolet absorbent i in the
test solution;
Ais---the peak area (or peak height) of the benzophenone ultraviolet absorbent i in the
standard working solution;
ci---the mass concentration of the benzophenone ultraviolet absorbent i in the standard
working solution, expressed in (mg/L);
c0---the mass concentration of the benzophenone ultraviolet absorbent i in the blank
test, expressed in (mg/L);
F---dilution factor;
V---the final volume of the test solution, expressed in (mL);
m---the mass of the sample, expressed in (g).
The test result shall be respectively expressed in the detection results of the various
benzophenone ultraviolet absorbents. The calculation result shall be retained to
integers.
8 Lower Limit of Determination and Precision
8.1 Lower Limit of Determination
The lower limit of determination of this Method is 10 mg/kg.
8.2 Precision
The relative standard deviation of two test results obtained through mutually
independent tests conducted in the same laboratory, and by the same operator using
the same equipment and the same test method on the same object in a short period
