Test of Mechanical Properties of Furniture - Part 4: Stability
of Storage Units
1 Scope
This document describes the test methods for the stability of storage units.
This document is applicable to cabinet (the storage type) furniture that has been assembled and
ready for use.
2 Normative References
The contents of the following documents constitute indispensable clauses of this document
through the normative references in the text. In terms of references with a specified date, only
versions with a specified date are applicable to this document. In terms of references without a
specified date, the latest version (including all the modifications) is applicable to this document.
GB/T 10357.5 Test of Mechanical Properties of Furniture - Part 5: Strength and Durability of
Storage Units
3 Terms and Definitions
The terms and definitions defined in GB/T 10357.5 and the following are applicable to this
document.
3.1 overturn
The state, in which, an untethered product cannot return to its normal upright position.
3.2 height adjustment device
A device used to make a certain component of a product height adjustable.
EXAMPLE: a certain component like a work surface.
3.3 TV-furniture
A storage-type furniture product used or designed to support televisions, television monitors
and similar objects.
3.4 bracket
A rigid support device to prevent overturn.
NOTE: it is usually made of metal, not a flexible device like a belt or a cable tie.
4 General Test Conditions
4.1 Pre-treatment
Products to be tested shall be intactly assembled and deliverable finished products. The product
and its components shall be assembled and / or configured in accordance with the instructions
provided. Unless otherwise stated, the tests shall be performed in the configuration that is least
conducive to the mechanical properties. If assembly or configuration instructions are not
provided, then, the assembly or fitting-together method shall be recorded in the test report.
Before the tests, fittings shall be tightened, and shall not be tightened again during the test when
there are no special requirements in the manufacturer's instructions. If changes in product
configuration are required to simulate the worst-case scenario, then, this shall be recorded in
the test report.
Unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer, before the tests, the unit shall be placed without
load for at least 24 hours under indoor environmental conditions.
The test shall be carried out on the test ground. The unit shall be leveled, and the leveling device
shall be set in the middle position, but it shall not be more than 13 mm from the fully closed
position.
The units used for installation on buildings shall only be tested in accordance with 6.7.
If the test cannot be carried out in accordance with the stipulations of this document, then, it
shall be close to the stipulations. Any deviations from the test methods specified in this
document shall be technically assessed and recorded in the test report.
4.2 Loading Force
The speed of static load application shall be slow, so as to ensure that the additional dynamic
load is small enough to be ignored. Unless otherwise specified, each load specified to be applied
shall be maintained for 10 seconds ~ 15 seconds.
When loading, the force value can be replaced by the mass of the weights. The conversion uses
the relations 10 N = 1 kg.
Appendix A provides guidelines for the selection of loads and force values, etc. for the tests.
Appendix B specifies the loads and force values.
Appendix C explains the principle for the selection of test methods included in this document.
4.3 Tolerances
5 Test Equipment and Facilities
5.1 Unless otherwise specified, any applicable test equipment can be used for tests, because the
test results only depend on whether the applied force is correct and not on the test equipment
itself.
The test equipment shall not hinder the deformation of the units, that is, during the tests, the
test equipment shall be able to move with the movement of the units, so as to ensure that the
load is always in the specified position and direction.
5.2 Ground: a hard, level and flat surface.
5.3 Wall surface: it shall be hard, vertical and flat.
5.4 Stops: used to prevent the units from sliding but cannot restrict the units from overturn. The
height of the stops shall be the lowest height that just prevents the units from moving.
5.5 Mass: the applied mass shall not enhance the unit structure, nor shall it change the stress
distribution of the units.
5.6 Load of suspended filing pockets: paper or similar substitutes shall be used for loading.
5.7 Spherical objects: for example, glass beads with a diameter of 10 mm ~ 15 mm, which
shall be loosely packed into a large flexible bag, so as to allow them to move in the bag during
the tests.
NOTE: loose means the bag is about 50% filled.
5.8 Loading pad: a rigid disc with a diameter of 100 mm and an edge rounding radius of 12
mm. The loading surface is a flat surface. If the space is limited, a loading pad with a diameter
of 50 mm can be used.
5.9 TV formworks: two frames or boxes with the shape shown in Figure 1 and the dimensions
shown in Table 2, which are capable of supporting loads acting through their center of gravity.
The unloaded mass shall be (10 0.2) kg.
The center of gravity of the unloaded formworks shall be the geometric center of the unloaded
formworks.
The change in the position of the center of gravity of the loaded formwork and the position of
the center of gravity of the unloaded formwork shall be limited to within 5 mm.
During the tests, the formworks shall be kept in the initial position.
Apply the vertical downward force specified in Table B.1 to the front panel of the opened
extension element or the centerline position 50 mm away from the outer edge of the opened
opening door or flap. For TV-furniture with both extension elements and opening doors, force
shall be successively applied to each component.
In accordance with the stipulations of Table B.1, assemble additional loads on the unloaded TV
formworks and repeat the above-mentioned test procedures.
Record whether the TV-furniture overturns or is supported by opened extension elements,
opened doors or opened flaps, and whether the TV formworks overturn. During the test, if the
TV-furniture is prevented from overturn due to opened extension elements, opened opening
